The Bermuda students visited this area last week. John Ramirez, left, of Blyth hosted Nigel Ming, who was quite impressed by Huron's snow. Band visits from Bermuda By Bonnie Gropp After a week of fun in the snow, it was back to the tropical climate of Bermuda for 32 high school band members who visited the area last week. John Ramirez, Nikki Snell and Stephanie Lentz were Blyth hosts for three members of Bermuda's Northlands Secondary School band, which arrived here on Sunday, March 28 and departed Saturday afternoon. This exchange program began two years ago when Central Huron Secondary School (CHSS) musical conductor Mr. Hugh McGregor met the Bermuda school's conductor, Mrs. Flood during a visit to that country. They decided an exchange program would be a good cultural, academic and musical experience for the student musicians. Since then the bands have taken turns travelling to each other's countries and studying at the schools. John Ramirez says the school system in Bermuda is quite different from here "as it is similar to the British system, which is indicative of Bermuda's culture." Also, the Bermuda students wear a uniform to school. John's guest, Nigel Ming, 15, said his first time in this country has been "a nice experience". Fas- cinated by the snow, John said the first thing the CHSS students did with the Bermudians when they got off the plane was have a good-old fashioned snowball fight. To fund the exchange trips, CHSS band members received sup- port through pizza sales. The Bermuda students held a dance and found sponsors. During their visit here, the Bermuda students have visited such highlights as the SkyDome and the Ontario Science Centre. On Friday, April 2, the musicians Ft A On Feb. 23,, Grand Bend Marine reported a cabin cruiser had been entered and a marine radio was stolen, along with other equipment. Approximate value is $1,000.00. There was a break, enter and theft on March 2 or 3 at Lot 1, Conc. 6, Ashfield Township. The victim's house was vandalized and when he returned home he found the following items missing: black Technichs receiver; Technichs C.D. player, single, front loading; Hitachi T.V., 26" monitor style; VCR's (2), Toshiba and Sanyo, both VHS; cassette deck, J.V.C.; Yamaha speakers, 160 watt, three way; one box assorted CD's and cassettes; Panasonic micro- wave oven; three cases beer; one Crime of the week Thieves steal marine radio performed a morning and afternoon concert for the students and for the general public at CHSS. Selections included contemporary and tradi- tional pieces. "Music is the international lan- guage which goes beyond all bor- ders,"says John, adding that it was an interesting experience for the almost exclusively non-white Bermudians to come to an area so predominantly white Anglo-Saxon. "It was clear to see that aside from the aesthetics we are almost the same. These are friendships that will last forever."
