By Rusty Blades The Blyth Bantams swept the OMHA Bantam E Championship last weekend with two wins in Lefroy. Saturday, April 3 they won 5-2 and then clinched the All- Ontario title with a convincing 6-0 whitewash on Sunday, April 4. In the first game, Blyth took the early lead but still needed a third period rally to secure the win. Blyth took a 1-0 lead 26 seconds into the game as Christopher Howson backhanded in a rebound off a Brad Anderson point shot. Blyth controlled the first two periods but had a hard time scoring on yet another fine opposition puck stopper. Blyth increased their lead to 2-0 midway through the second frame thanks to some strong forechecking. Jason McDougall fed Brian McNichol deep in the Lefroy zone and McNichol passed to John Armstrong, who tipped the puck in from close range. Lefroy came out strong to start the third period and scored twice, including a power play goal, to tie the game 2-2 just three minutes and 10 seconds into the period. Blyth rebounded quickly and took the lead 17 seconds later as Mike Salverda set up Chris Stewart at the edge of the Lefroy goal. Stewart saw the opening and fired the puck through the goalie's legs. Blyth caught a break with just under five minutes to play as a Lefroy goal was called back because it was kicked in. McNichol won the ensuing faceoff and rushed the puck the length of the ice. Ten feet inside the Lefroy blueline, McNichol sent a hard pass towards the front of the Lefroy net. This was deftly tapped in by a charging John Armstrong. The defence of Peter Craig, Greg Toll, Tim Cowan, Jonathan Collins, Rob Johnston, Henry Bos and Brad Anderson shut the door the rest of the way and Stewart sealed the win with an empty net goal from centre ice with only 18 seconds remaining in the game. Michael de Jong played solid in the Blyth net as he led the team to this 2-0 series lead. Blyth returned to Lefroy on , Sunday for game three of the series. The Bantams scored two goals in each period while goaltenders Chris Lee and de Jong shared the shutout in their series clinching triumph.
