Blyth Tykes end year with only 2 losses
The Blyth Tykes have had a
fabulous year, ending the season
this past weekend in a playoff
tournament in Seaforth. There have
been many improvements in these
players and their hockey skills
throughout the season. The team
has played in two tournaments
during the season, one in Zurich,
the other in Clinton. They won the
"B" in Clinton edging out
Dorchester 5 - 3.
In the entire season's schedule
they have lost just two games; one
to Seaforth early in the season, the
other to Wingham. They came back
later in the season to beat Seaforth
and again in a shoot-out at the
WOAA finals. Quite a record!
In the final round of the WOAA
Blyth came up against Clinton and
lost in a hard fought game ending 5
to 3. The team had the parents and
spectators on their feet during
many close games during the
season. Thanks to coach Jeff Peters
for his time and "extra" effort and
the assistants Steve Cook, Doug
McClinchey and Ken Stewart. It
was a great season.
Brussels Novices
end successful year
The Brussels Novice House-
league finished the season on
March 24 with their final game
against Belgrave. They had
advanced to the fmals by defeating
Stephen Township and the Zurich
Novice teams.
Playing against the high scoring
Belgrave team on March 19
Brussels lost by a score of 9 - 5.
Brussels' goals were scored by
Brian Oldfield with assists going to
Stephen Todd and Robert Kerr.
March 22, the game was played
in Belgrave and again Brussels was
beaten, this time by a score of 9-2.
Scoring for Brussels were Andy
Van Beek and Kerr. Taking the
honours for Belgrave were the
scoring trio of Curtis Knight, two;
Craig Marks, three and Justin
Campbell, three. The three also
tallied the assists.
The third game of the series was
played in Brussels on March 24.
The Brussels team played a very
strong and aggressive game but
were defeated by Belgrave 6-4.
Greeters at Duffs United Church
March 28 were Kelly and Scott
McDonald. The Lenten Liturgy
was read by Brenda Linton and
daughter Stacie, who extinguished
the fifth candle.
The choir sang a very moving
song called, "Stay With Us".
Before going downstairs to Sunday
School the kids gathered around
Rev. Banks to hear more of Noah's
story. The gospel lesson reader was
Shelly McGavin who read John 11:
17-45, the Death of Lazarus.
Harvey McClure
shares spring
memories
I had a visit with Harvey
McClure the other day and I asked
if he had any special memories of
spring.
The next day, after being up most
of the night thinking about this, he
presented me with a three page
letter. In it were stories of him and
his brother, Sam. He remembers
the times when at last they could
turn the cows out to pasture, how
happy the cows were to eat green
grass.
As a kid he used to like rounding
them up for milking and to hear all
the birds that had come back in
spring.
Goals for Brussels were scored by
Oldfield (2), Kerr and Chris
Coulter.
Campbell and Marks divided
scoring for Belgrave. Great
goaltending by Travis Campbell
helped to keep the Brussels team
back.
Matt McCall and Matt Elliott
shared Brussels goaltending duties
for all the games. Congratulations
to both teams for a good year and
for an exciting playoff season.
Members of the Brussels Novice
were Brian Oldfield, Stephen Todd,
Chris Coulter, Darryl Houston,
Scott McDonald, Chris Blake,
Marc Fisher, Lee Dilworth, Kenny
McCallum, Tim Harrison, Mark
Hunter, Robert Kerr, Darrell
McClure, Andy Van Beek,
Matthew Clarkson, Matt Elliott and
Matt McCall.
Other players for Belgrave were
Chad Cook, Garrett Knight, Devin
Moffatt, Ken McCracken, Dan
Mullin, Matthew Bromley and
Travis Hopper.
The sermon was titled "What do
we do with Death?" It was
interesting to note how the story
gave a glimpse of first century
funeral customs. Also that grief and
pain are always a part of death then
as now. The overall message is -
Death is not to be feared; that in
life and death we belong to God,
who can redeem us even from
death.
The Lenten collection jar swelled
as people put in five cents per year
of life. Next week it will be two
cents per light bulb in the house.
The U.C.W. will have a food
booth at the McGavin sale on April
7. Karen Hoegy and Marilyn
McDonald will be contacting
people to help.
The U.C.W. meeting has been
rescheduled to May. Following is a
religious joke I'd like to share.
In Boston, a minister noticed a
group of boys standing around a
small stray dog, "What are you
doing boys?"
"Telling lies, said one. "The one
who tells the biggest lie gets the
dog."
"Why, when I was your age," the
shocked minister said, "I never
thought of telling a lie."
The boys looked at each other, a
little crestfallen. Finally one of
them shrugged and said, "I guess
he wins the dog."
Grey council
awards gravel
contracts
Grey Township council held its
regular meeting on March 22 and
awarded two gravel contracts. The
tender of Donegan's Haulage for
the supply, crushing and hauling of
11,500 cubic yards "A" gravel at
$3.04 yard was accepted. The
Donegan tender, amounting to
$37,407.20 was the lowest of seven
received.
The tender of John McKercher
Construction for the loading and
trucking of 15,000 cubic yards "A"
gravel at $1.39/yard was accepted.
The McKercher tender, amounting
to $22,309.50, was the lowest of
eight received.
Council was advised of its 1993
allocation from the Ministry of
Transportation. In 1993, Grey
Township will receive $455,100
from the Ministry of Transportation
based on expenditures of $589,000.
Council passed a 1993 budget of
road expenditures amounting to
$675,000.
In other business, Council
authorized a grant of $50 to the
Huron County Farm & Home
Safety Association for 1993.
The next regular meeting of
Council is scheduled for April 5 at
7 p.m.
Glanvilles
celebrate 25th
• anniversary
Happy anniversary to Lorne and
Bonnie Glanville who celebrated
their 25th anniversary.
Don and Marilyn McDonald
celebrated 40 years of marriage on
March 28. They were married at
Whitechurch and remembered
being driven around on a flatbed
truck after the wedding. Don recalls
how they were all set to leave on
their honeymoon and the car
wouldn't start. Lifting the hood he
found a block of Limburger cheese
on the manifold.
Bill Blake called to say Mildred
is recovering well at the Clinton
Hospital.
Ken and Peg Banks spent two
days at the home of Rev. Randy
and Patty Banks.
Isabelle Shortreed had a visit
from her grandson, Scott
Beuermann on Saturday.
