As a Lefroy Bantam slides to try and stop the play a Blyth forward takes his best shot toward
the goalie's crease. Blyth finished on top in what was a back and forth contest to take the first
game of the finals.
Bantams win first 'E' final
Brussels Pee Wee Reps played
game two in their best of three
series against Stephen Township
March 22. Despite losing 5-4 the
squad displayed a lot of class and
continued playing hockey in what
was often a frustrating game.
The third and deciding game was
played in Brussels March 23.
Stephen opened the scoring
midway through the first period.
Brussels answered back four
minutes later to tie it.
Early in the second period the
two teams traded goals. With the
score tied at two Stephen scored to
go up by one. Brussels then started
to dominate play scoring twice in
the second and once in the third to
win the game 5-3. With the win
Brussels Pee Wees advanced to the
WOAA South Group Final against
Zurich.
Game one in the best of three
series was played in Brussels
March 25. The game remained
scoreless until Corey Newman
assisted by Chad McCallum scored
with 24 seconds left in the first
period. Andrew Exel assisted by
Brett Fischer put Brussels up by
two late in the second. Zurich then
scored to come within one.

The Blyth Bantams played out a
successful opening to their OMHA
Bantam 'E' Final series on March
28 in Blyth as they squeaked past
Lefroy 5-4.
Blyth played a tentative first
period, and it showed, as Lefroy
opened the scoring five minutes
into the game. Although Blyth
didn't storm right back, they did
manage to tie the game with just
over four minutes remaining in the
first as Jason Rutledge accepted
Ryan Chamney's pass and tucked
the puck through a fallen Lefroy
cage keeper. Blyth went on the
power play seconds later but
Lefroy did the scoring as they took
a 2-1 first period lead with a short-
handed effort.
Two minutes into the second
period Rutledge, with assists to
Christopher Howson and Chainney,
once again tied the game. He was
sent in alone on a breakaway where
he shot one upstairs on the blocker
side.
The third period was full of
fireworks with Blyth getting their
first lead of the game two minutes
in.
With the play in the Lefroy end,
Rutledge sent a hard centering pass
that was deftly tipped by Howson
past the Lefroy goaltender.
One minute later Henry Bos
upped the score to 4-2 as he
blocked a Lefroy clearing attempt
and drifted a shot past a partially
screened goalie.
With 10 minutes left in the game
Lefroy crept to within 4-3 as they
scored a powerplay goal. Then at
2:30 Blyth once again gave
themselves a two goal cushion.
Brian McNichol sent a clearing
pass towards the Lefroy zone, then
Chris Stewart split the defence,
beat the goalie to the puck and
deked around him to slip the puck
into the goal.
Lefroy pulled their goalie with
just under two minutes remaining
and they cut Blyth's lead to 5-4
with 1:40 left.
Lefroy buzzed the Blyth zone the
rest of the way and Blyth had to
play desperation hockey until the
final buzzer sounded. They did
manage to hang on and secure the
series opening game.
The series continues in Lefroy
this weekend with game two in
Lefroy on Saturday, April 3 at
1 p.m. while game three goes in
Lefroy on Sunday, April 4 at 3 p.m.
Game four and game five, if
necessary, will be played in Blyth
on Good Friday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
and April 10 at 3 p.m.
That's gotta hurt!
A collision behind the Blyth Bantams' net puts a Lefroy
forward to the ice during Sunday afternoon's Ontario finals.
It was a close race between two strong teams, but Blyth
skated away with the win in this first of five series.
Brussels PeeWee reps
play frustrating game
Early in the third Zurich tied it at
three. The rest of the period
remained scoreless to put the game
into overtime. Early in overtime
McCallum assisted by Newman
scored the winning goal. Final
score was 3-2 giving Brussels the
series lead.
