Pastor reflects on death
By Donald Vair, Belgrave
Something has gone terribly
wrong on planet earth. On every
front we hear a cry for a better
world.
The prophet Isaiah accurately
described our world of today
almost 300 years ago when he, by
the spirit of God, wrote (Isa. 53:6)
"All we, like sheep, have gone
astray; we have turned everyone to
his own way ..." The world's way is
not Gods way, hence the desperate
cry to God for something better.
How one views any particular
issue depends upon one's starting
point. Some think it would be a
better world if we could have
abortion on demand. Others would
think the world a better place if
devices and drugs could be
developed to perfnit them to live
sexually as they pleased, without
fear of consequences. There are
those who would prefer a world
where certain races would be
isolated if not eliminated. Again,
one's starting point determines
what solutions or conclusions one
comes to.
If our prayer for a better world is
directed to almighty God as He is
revealed in His Holy Word the
Bible, then we must see the world
through His eyes, we must want
His answer not man's.
The powerful, but weak, United
Nations cannot answer our prayer,
for with all its international
expertise it does not diagnose the
problem accurately and so its
solutions fail.
God's Word then is our starting
point and God pulls no punches, for
He sees and declares the heart of
the problem is the problem the
heart. The problem is sin — a failure
to obey God's laws.
Galatians 5 describes the human
heart, out of which comes the
injustice and oppression. The
apostle Paul speaks of the heart as
hating, making trouble, doing
witchcraft, being jealous, being
angry with each other, causing
divisions among people, taking part
in sexua sins and worshipping
false gods.
After giving a description of the
sinful heart, he describes the heart
that goes God's way. This heart is
not the old one made over, but
rather a brand new heart out of
which flows love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness and
self-control.
When I lived in Hamilton I
would occasionally visit a little
mission in a rough, tough
Reflecting on the life and death
of his daughter, Joy, Pastor Came
asked the Missionary congregation:
"Are you ready to go to heaven or
would there be some things you
would have to clear up first?"
The scripture reading was taken
from I Peter 5: 1-11 for the March
21 service.
If life can be terminated in a
moment, there is a need for one to
have the right relationships. If there
is need to apologize to God or
anyone else, one better do it now,
before it is too late.
Often one has good intentions, to
visit, phone a friend or write a letter
but then there is no follow through.
Pastor Carne declared that as
'tragic as it is to have lost a
daughter, there is much, for which
to be thankful. Joy was a loving,
thoughtful daughter, wife and
mother who had a concern for
others, who reached out to help
others often through prayer.
Real tragedy is seen in broken
homes or dysfunctional families or
where children hurt their parents.

neighbourhood. It was a fact that
this tiny mission did more to
restore law and order than the
police could ever do, because it
dealt with the source of the crime ...
the human heart.
We can pray for a better world
until the cows come home, and
that's fine as long as we understand
that the "Better World" begins in
my heart and yours, yes the
individual heart.
How do I get this new heart that
we described earlier? I get it when I
confess to God that I am a sinner
and in genuine repentance accept
Christ's shed blood on CalVary's
cross, as full payment for my sin
debt to God. From this point on I
trust the risen, living Christ as my
Saviour and Lord as long as my life
shall last.
I may feel powerless to really
affect the world in the great and
grand perspective of things, but I
can allow Christ to affect and
change my world in the home,
toward my neighbour and on the
job, as I surrender myself in total to
Him.
The heart of the world's problems
is the problem of the heart. Only
Christ is the answer to our prayer
for a better world.
Making the grab
The grabieton at the annual Blyth Christian Reformed
Church Bazaar is always a popular meeting place for
children such as (left to right) Tyson Sjaarda, Laura
Benjamins, Kirsten Sjaarda and Bethany Nonkes. The
bazaar was held March 17 at the Biyth arena.
One may ask "Is this how God
treats His people?" The answer is
"Yes". God gets His people ready
for heaven and the ones left behind
knowing a loved one is already
there, feel closer to heaven and take
their strength through the loving
Saviour.
Special music was provided by a
male quartet made up of Pastor
Came, Jim Campbell, Marlin Good
and Bob Lewis.
