Betty Marsh speaks to club
The monthly meeting of the
Women's Institute was held at the
Community Hall on Thursday,
March 18 starting at 1 p.m. with a
dessert lunch. The hostesses were
Marjorie McDougall, Bernice
Anderson and Beth Lansing. The
lucky saucer was won by Violet
Durnin. Jean Plaetzer was the
winner for the grocery list in purse
and the person with most green on
for St. Patrick's was Ruth Jardin.
President Evelyn Flett thanked
the ladies for the lovely lunch and
the Mary Stewart Collect was
repeated in unison. Evelyn read a
poem "Pump on Grandpa's Farm".

UCW busy
quilting
A busy day was held on Monday,
March 15 at Knox United Church.
The U.C.W. was busy quilting and
finishing two crib quilts, to be
given to the Family Services.
Donations for this from the
members were also given for roll
call. Sandwiches were enjoyed at
noon and Tina Empey, Elva and
Ruth Armstrong treated the
members to dessert and beverage.
A short business meeting was
held with Elva Armstrong in
charge. Donations for the Easter
baskets will be needed. The baskets
will be packed and delivered on
Thursday, April 8.
Sympathies given
Sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Jack
Ladd and family, relatives and and
friends on the passing of his
mother, Mrs. Nell (Ladd) Handy.
She was formerly of Auburn where
her husband Clayton Ladd was a
barber. They then moved to Blyth,
then later to Goderich where he
barbered as well.
Mr. Gary Rodgers of Glammis

parents, Mr. and Mrs. Emerson

meeting were read by Secretary
Kay Lapp. The treasurer's report
was given by Marion Haggitt in the
absence of Tina Empey.
Betty Archambault reported on
the 4H club and a discussion took
place. It was decided that the
Institute would sponsor them.
The April meeting is the annual
one and will be held at Kate's
Station restaurant at Vanastra on
Thursday, April 15 at 11:30. Each
standing committee is to have their
reports ready for this meeting.
The roll call "Bring a family

The Silver Tops held their pot
luck dinner on Wednesday, March
17 with 20 members enjoying the
meal. The tables were beautifully
decorated for St. Patrick's. Those in
charge were Nancy Slater and Lou
Issac.
There were several winners of
shamrocks — Dorothy Grange, Tom
Jardin, Lou Issac, Ethel Ball, Tom
Lawlor, Tom Haggitt.
There was also a St. Patrick's
quizz. Marion Haggitt introduced
Betty Marsh of Goderich and
formerly of Auburn who is
president of Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital Auxiliary. She
told of the work it involved. They
have a hair shop where 388 patients
get their hair washed and set and a
manicure service for the chronic
ward. Wagons go around to the
patients with candy, books, etc.
They have the Hospital Equipment
Lottery Project for People
(H.E.L.P.P.) She showed the lottery
tickets, which can be obtained at
the Big V drug store in Goderich at
50 cents a ticket.
She showed many articles made
for patients and for the gift shop for
people to buy. Nancy Slater makes
the tray favours.
The Auxiliary fundraisers include
a bake sale and bazaar and tag day.
Ms Marsh told that the money
went for yarn to knit, flowers and
containers to make arrangements
and candy, all of which are sold in
the gift shop.
The purpose is to assist the
hospital. There are many volunteers
to work and knit and also tend to
the gift shop. This is a very
interesting topic and anyone with
time on her hands could be a
volunteer to a worthy cause. She
was thanked by Dorothy Grange.
Dorothy then chaired the
business part and read an article
from the Voice magazine.
Several events are coming up; an
invitation to Londesboro Seniors at
noon on Wednesday, April 28.
Zone Rally on April 22 at Exeter,
maybe a bus trip later on and the
"Walk" in May.
There is to be a new drapery rod
bought for the stage curtains which
Ell Lapp is looking after.
