three to four days in each paddock.
The paddocks are further divided
by a simple portable electric fence
to give the cattle a fresh growth
each day they're in the paddock.
This rotation gives each paddock
36 days for regrowth before the cat-
tle come in again, meaning there is
always about 10 inches of fresh
growth for the cattle.
In later summer and fall he feeds
the hay he harvested in May and
June back to the cattle to supple-
ment the pasture which isn't as
nutritious at this point. He figures
he gets 1.3 pounds of gain per day
per animal, averaging 400 pounds
of gain per acre each season.
Input costs are low. He has less
than $20,000 invested in farm
equipment. He provides minerals
and salt and some medical supplies
and applies nitrogen three times a
year to spur growth. The cattle
themselves put back 150 tons of
manure per acre, he estimates.
"It's a good healthy system," he
says. Anyone who has tired land
should put it into pasture for five
years. "You'd never know it was
the same farm," he predicted.
Earth worm population on tilled
land is abut 400,000 per acre but on
pasture it is 1.2 million.

Farming is often a frustrating and depressing business to be in as weather conditions and
falling commodity prices conspire to bankrupt struggling farmers. But the miracle of new birth

is something few people get to witness on a regular basis and for many a farmer, this a
welcome respite from the bad times. These day-old piglets not only inspire a smile because of
their 'cuteness' but represent hope the future.
