Apple orchard thrives on
unique irrigation system
By Lisa Boonstoppel-Pot
Making a profit is just a gleam on
the apple skin for Mason and Hazel
Bailey, owners of Blythe Brooke
Orchards.
The core of the enterprise is how
the newly planted orchard offers
Mr. Bailey the opportunity to
experiment and expand on his envi-
ronmental beliefs.
The idea came to fruition three
years ago when Mr. Bailey, a real
estate broker and former farmer,
bought a 125-acre farm a few kilo-
metres west of Blyth.
Though the acreage had never
been particularly profitable when
farmed conventionally, Mr. Bailey
saw it as a perfect sight for an apple
orchard.
"I asked myself what that land
was best suited for and the answer
was trees and grass," recalls the
Blyth resident. ''Apple trees are
suited to our climate."
Better still, the farm had a pond
which provided Mr. Bailey a per-
fect opportunity to experiment with
a unique form of irrigation—drip
irrigation.
As his plans ripened, so did the
20 acres of trees he planted in May,
1988 under the nourishment pro-
vided by the drip irrigation.
The system is operated by a three
horsepower liquid pumper which
pumps water through underground
pipes running alongside the tree
rows. At each tree, the pipe is fitted
with an emitter (tap) which releases
a gallon of water per hour.
Moreover, Mr. Bailey uses the
system to naturally fertilize the
trees by injecting liquid fertilizer
into the piping system.
"I believe I can get better quality
and bigger volume from the trees
using this system," says Mr. Bailey.
"I wasn't sure of that until last year
when I got my first crop and had
beautiful apples."
Not only were the apples beauti-
ful, but they were bountiful. He
had bushels of McIntosh, Empire,

The fruits of labour
Sitting amongst the first harvest from Blyth Brooke Orchards, owned by Mason and Hazel
Bailey, are three of the couple's grandchildren (left to right) Pamela, Matthew and Becky
Morrison. Using a unique irrigating process, Mr. Bailey is convinced he can earn higher yields
and bigger fruit from his trees
