Every bottle of vine- gar comes with four original recipes attached, which are inter- changeable, a marketing strategy the couple devised early. "When we first began marketing our vinegars we used beer bottles" explains Dave. "We had always aimed at the high brow market, so we would only drink imported beer." However, it wasn't long before they realized they needed to fmd a bottle supplier, but costs were astronomical for the novice entrepreneurs. They eventually found a supplier who said he would supply 4500 bottles over six months. "That was frightening. We told him that could be a 10 year supply for us," said Dave. Commit- ting themselves to the idea however they came up with the idea of a gift pack of four bottles of different kinds of vinegars, with an attached recipe book to give it higher value appeal for gift stores, says Dave. "Dave and his uncle wrote the book on the computer in one day," said Judie. The money saved by doing it themselves she adds, helped to purchase their own com- puter. These personal touches added to the couple's marketing skills, (Dav- e's university and professional background is in marketing) have helped Glen Farms on the road to small business success. "You don't have to spend $150,000 to start," says Dave. "Find your talent and figure out how to market it without going in over your head. This is how rural business will thrive." Judie says when she penetrated the Toronto market about 18 months ago, she discovered most retailers wanted to buy on credit, however Glen Farms has usually operated on a COD basis only. "Most of them wanted a net of 30 days," said Dave. "We can't grow if we have to bankroll Toronto to do it." So the Glens came up with a marketing strategy to alleviate the problem. Retailers were presented with a coupon worth $25 off their next order of $175 or more. Plus there was a discount of 10 percent offered on all COD orders. Innovative concepts like these added to the couple's dogged on the road marketing have helped make Glen Farms a household word. One such example is the annual Christ- mas Open House. Other small busi- ness people were invited to set up display areas and for one day in November the tiny Glen home was transformed into a mini trade show for the general public. "It was great fun, like a small party," said Judie. Another example is the Glen Farms Grapevine issued to retail- ers. Printed on recycled paper, it offers little tips, recipes and infor- mation on Glen Farms.
