Blyth announces summer series The Blyth Festival is adding three special event presentations to its repertory of New Canadian Plays this summer. "We want The world premiere of Timothy Findley's newest play, The Stillborn Lover, especially written for William Hutt and Martha Henry, previews at The Grand March 23, 24 and 25, opens Friday, March 26, 1993 at 8:00 p.m. and continues until April 17. The Stillborn Lover is presented as a co-production with the National Arts Centre (Ottawa). Harry Raymond (William Hutt), Canada's Ambassador in Moscow, and his wife, Marian (Martha Henry), have been recalled to Ottawa for "special duties"--a euphemism for interrogation. Photos exist in KGB files implicating Raymond in the murder of a young man in Moscow. The Minister for External Affairs, Michael Riordon (Donald Davis), is being touted as his party's next leader and is determined that any scandal surrounding his long-time friend will not contaminate his career, which may soon take him and his brilliant wife, Juliet (Patricia Collins) to the prime minister's office. Secluded in a safe house in Rockcliffe, the Raymonds are interrogated by R.C.M.P. Superintendent Daniel Jackman (Hardee T. Lineham) and his partner, Corporal Greg Mahavolitch (Michael McManus). All of the cast members of The Stillborn Lover are Grand Theatre stage veterans, including former artistic director William Hutt who recently starred in A Christmas Carol and The Dining Room earlier this season. He is joined by artistic director Martha Henry, who last appeared on The Grand Stage opposite Mr. Hutt in A.R. Gurney's The Cocktail Hour in 1990. Peter Moss, who previously directed The Cocktail Hour and The Man Who Came to Dinner at The Grand, directs this celebrated cast. The production's set and costumes are designed by Astrid Janson whose recent Grand credits include The Dining Room, Farther West, Woman in Mind and Fire. Lighting designer Paul Mathiesen makes his Grand Theatre debut with this production as does Boko Suzuki who is composing original music. On Monday, July 12 at 8:30, Canadian music sensation Moxy Friivous will bring their unique musical style to the stage in Blyth, famous for songs such as Green Eggs and Ham and Once I Was The King of Spain. They first came to Blyth in January 1993 to work on their own musical. In March they returned to develop material for their new album to be released in July. Sunday, Aug. 1 at 8:30, Canadian Country Music Male Vocalist nominee and member of the Hall of Fame Mercey Brothers, Larry Mercey comes to Blyth. On Sunday, Aug. 8, and Monday, Aug. 9, Native Theatre School returns to Memorial Hall. An intensive exploration of Native Performance Culture, the Native Theatre School presents a combination of modern performance training and traditional cultural teachings. Tickets for Moxy Friivous and Larry Mercey are $15. and are expected to sell out early. Tickets for Native Theatre School are $10. Tickets go on sale April 5 and are available by calling the Blyth Festival box office at (519) 523- 9300. Playwright contest announced Entry forms are now available and scripts are being accepted for the Seventh Annual Young Playwrights' Competition. This competition, co-sponsored by The Grand Theatre and Q103 FM Radio, is open to all young people 19 years of age or under who are registered in a Southwestern Ontario school. Scripts must be received at The Grand Theatre by 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 16, 1993; the winners will be announced the week of Monday, May 17, 1993. The winning scripts will be workshopped during the week of May 25-29 and presented as public readings by professional actors May 28 (Intermediate Division) and May 29 (Senior Division) in The Grand's McManus Theatre. There are two categories in the competition: the Intermediate Division, for students in grades seven to 10, and the Senior Division for those in grades 11 through O.A.C. Winners in both divisions will receive a cash prize plus two Grand Theatre Season subscriptions for the 1993/94 season. Each contestant May enter only one script. Although collaborative efforts are eligible, no more than one prize will be awarded for each winning script. The judges of the competition will be experienced professionals whose decisions will be fmal. Entry forms are currently being distributed to Southwestern Ontario schools. They are also available at The Grand Theatre Box Office and from Q103 FM Radio.
