Grey Township Council held its regular meeting on March 1 and adopted the 1993 budgets of both the Brussels, Morris and Grey Board of Recreation Management and the Walton Landfill Committee. Grey Township's share of the BMG Recreation Board's deficit is $15,169.56 compared to $10,385 in 1992 which represents a 46 per cent increase. The large increase is due in large part to higher utility costs and decreased 1992 revenues to the poor weather. Grey Township's share of the deficit of the Walton Landfill site is projected at $30,131 compared to $34,191.89 for 1992. Council authorized an application to the Ministry of Transportation for a supplementary allocation towards the purchase of a new tandem dump truck. The estimated cost of the truck is $130,000. In other business Council approved the payment for general accounts totalling $49,269.45 and road accounts totalling $30,763.10. A former school bus driver was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty in Wingham's provincial court, March 10 to a charge of over 80. Crown Attorney Robert Morris told presiding Judge R.G.E. Hunter that on Feb. 5 at 3:35 p.m., Wing- ham police received a call that a bus driver at the high school was impaired. When the officers arrived, the bus was half loaded with students. When they spoke to the driver, 58-year-old James Fin- leon, they detected an odour of alcohol. The officers asked Mr. Finleon to perform the roadside balance tests, which he completed without too much difficulty, the court was told. Mr. Morris added that Mr. Fin- icon took the demand test, which he failed. A breathalizer taken later at the station showed a reading of 110. Speaking on behalf of the accused, the defense attorney asked the court to take into consid- eration that Mr. Finleon, who resides at RR2, Lucknow, had lost his job. Also, he said, Mr. Finleon had not moved the bus with the stu- dents in it and had co-operated fully with the police. "It was a charge of over 80, not an impaired driving charge," he said. "I understand that but if police hadn't arrived we could assume he was going to drive that bus," said Judge Hunter. After sentencing Mr. Finleon, Judge Hunter delivered a stern rep- rimand. "It boggles the mind that you would arrive to school with the intention of driving a bus full of students home. You have to have taken leave of your senses. People trust you. They're placing their children in your care." Man pleads guilty to assault A Brussels man pled guilty to assault in provincial court in Wing- ham, March 10. Kenneth Graber was charged fol- lowing an incident on Jan. 25. He will appear in court April 21 for sentencing.
