Ashley Howson wins gold
On Sunday, Feb. 21, five girls
from the Blyth Figure Skating Club
went to the annual Interclub
Competition in Mitchell. Ashley
Howson came home victorious
with a gold medal in the
configureskate "A" division.
Julie Ritchie, Amanda Howson,
Rachel Arthur and Kimberley
Richmond also skated and while
not placing in their medial
divisions, did skate excellent
programs.
Skaters have been busy testing
lately. On Wednesday, Mar. 10 in
Clinton, Ashley Howson passed her
Senior Bronze Dance — Ten Fox.
Also on Mar. 10 in Wingham,
Laura Meier passed her Preliminary
Dance — Dutch Waltz, Julie Ritchie
passed her Jr. Bronze Dance,
Willow and her Preliminary
Freeskate, Amanda Howson passed
her Jr. Silver Dance — Foxtrot and
her turns in Isolation part of her
First Figure.
Barons sweep Bulls for title
By Rusty Blades
Although it didn't come easy, 10
years of dedication fmally paid off
for the Blyth Bantams last week as
they claimed the W.O.A.A. Bantam
'E' crown. Blyth hosted Normanby
in game five of the final series on
March 10 as they rode a furious
late game comeback to edge the
visitors 5-3 and claim the Dr. B.
Weilor trophy as Bantam 'E'
champions.
Blyth came out flat and, before
they could say "Sergei
Krivokrasov", they were down 3-0.
Normanby jumped on a nervous
home squad with a goal in the first
minute and two more, nine seconds
apart four minutes into the game.
Blyth responded with a turn-
around in period two as they
swarmed the opposition zone but
couldn't finish off their plays with
goals.
The importance of this game with
respect to the balance of their
season was eloquently relayed to
the team during the second period
intermission by Coach McDougall.
He had everyone's undivided
attention and Blyth responded with
a spirited third period thriller. With
Normanby still in front 3-0, Blyth's
"Cardiac Kids" came through with
a heart-stopping finish. A power
play goal with exactly nine minutes
remaining in the game sparked the
excitement as Jonathan Collins set
up Henry Bos's blue line shot that
deflected in off Mike Salverda's
body.
Peter Craig and Jason Rutledge
assisted on the goal that brought
Blyth to within a point, 24 seconds
later as Christopher Howson shot
the puck over a fallen Normanby
goaltender.
Strong forechecking by Brian
McNichol and Brian Marks
resulted in the tying goal with 2:24
left. Chris Stewart took the pass at
the corner of the net and
backhanded the puck past the
goalie.
The fireworks continued as a
result of constant offensive
pressure and Blyth notched the
game winner with less than two
minutes showing on the clock.
Brad Anderson sent Howson and
Rutledge in on a two on one break.
Rutledge used Howson as a decoy
all the way as he slid a low shot
into he far corner. With the clock
ticking down and a big Blyth
crowd providing support, Bos put
the icing on the championship
The Brussels Novice
Houseleague team has advanced to
the final round of playoffs by
defeating Zurich in two games
straight. The first game, played
March 5 in Zurich, was a tough one
going into overtime.
The only goal of the first period
was scored by Brian Oldfield of
Brussels, assisted by Stephen Todd.
celebration with an empty net goal
with 31 seconds remaining.
This 5-3 win advances them to the
O.M.H.A. All-Ontario Semi-Finals.
Brussels was held scoreless in the
second but Zurich scored one to tie
the game.
The third period saw each team
put in one for a tie game. Brussels
goal was scored by Chris Blake.

The Brussels Bulls 1993 hockey
season came to an abrupt end at
3:38 of sudden death overtime
when Trevor Heidman scored his
second goal of the night for a 5-4
Hanover win. The four game sweep
of the Bulls gives the Barons their
ninth consecutive Western Jr C
Championship and advances them
to the all-Ontario Quarter-Finals
against the winner of the Tilbury-
Mooretown series.
Heidman, the games first star,
added three assists while linemates
Ray Buttineau (2) and Jeremy
Franks completed the scoring in a
game that saw Hanover holding
period leads of 2-1 and 4-2.
Brad Carter with two, Jonathan
Lane and Josh Alexander scored
for the Bulls. Alexander, who also
added two assists, tied the game
with 44 seconds remaining to force
overtime. After a scoreless 10
minute period the teams returned to
the ice for sudden death.
Despite the disappointing finish
the Bulls once again had a
successful season losing only eight
regular season games and sweeping
Walkerton and Wingham to reach
the finals. As well, the Bulls were
the only team to defeat the Hanover
Club this season and remain the
only team to win a league playoff
game against the Barons in the
1990s.
The Bulls will be holding their
year end banquet and dance April 3
at the BMG Arena with their
annual meeting scheduled for May.
Tickets for the banquet and dance
will be available at the door.
Correction
In last week's issue of The Citi-
zen the name of the precision
skaters from Wingham was incor-
rectly given. The skaters are known
as The Definite Edge. We apolo-
gize for any confusion this may
have caused.

The goalie for the Hanover Atoms gets a little help from his friends as he tries to keep the
Ingersoll forwards shot out of the crease. The two teams were in Brussels Saturday, vying for
a spot in the semi-final 'B' division championship round of the Optimists 19th annual
tournament. There was too much of this type of action around Hanover's net, however, and
the Ingersoll team went on to this game, then the consolation side.
