Box 527 Goderich, Ontario, N7A 4C7 Letter to the editor THE EDITOR, Now that that the village petition has been laid to rest; it truly earned its demise; would it not appropriate to ask the "nit-picker" councillors to resign? Who in their right minds would advocate, "a make work effort", adding expense, indirectly to the taxpayers, hunting nickels and dimes that are not lost, never were lost and readily accounted for. What a state of affairs this village would be in were it not for the "majority" of our council. Villagers: read the minutes of the council meetings. They are approved and passed by council and are accessible to you. They are the facts, not slanted views and opinions. Could it be, that the intelligence of the ratepayers is being insulted? Could it be, that a shared interest dominates honesty and integrity? Could it be, the request for new office filing cabinets was a "no- no", fearing what lurks at the bottom of the old ones? Could be! Verne Dakin. Reader voices objections to pastor's letter THE EDITOR, In response to Pastor Carne's letter (Feb. 17, Citizen) with more enlightenment, he might realize this is the Twentieth Century. If Came finds the literature of Thomas Paine mentally harmful, he must also find documents such as the American Constitution or the U.N. Charter of Human Rights also hazardous, where his philosophy is very much alive today. Humanists and atheists alike form opinions by means of critical thinking and human reasoning, shaped by all available evidence, including the bible. How else would one become a non-believer? The bible is an ancient science book from our primitive ancestors to explain how natural phenomenon occurred. One believed some supernatural being must be behind it. Taken literally, the world would be flat, the universe would revolve around the earth, and a Godtalker would still be performing an exorcism on one to cure a bad case of constipation. It is amusing that one can swear an oath on the bible in a court of law yet it couldn't be entered as evidence as we are only told it's the word of God, it's neither authored or dated, and therefore becomes hearsay, not reliable at all. Personally, I have yet to meet a born or genuine "born-again" Christian, Jew, Muslim, or Hindu. It is a myth. Human beings are all born humanists. One does have to be indoctrinated into any one particular religion. Came should understand that if he were born in India he would be worshipping a three headed God rather than the "one true God". To humanists nothing is above inquiry including oneself, the bible, or the Godtalkers and what they preach, which is not to say all of what Christianity teaches, is harmful. Newspapers are an open forum to debate events, ideas, and opinions expressed by columnists and readers. Such debates only encourage discussion of differing ideas and/or beliefs in the hope of promoting better ideas. One thing about free speech is that I have the right to express an opinion even if some people find it offensive to their religiosity. Censorship of any kind is the least productive and a dangerous tactic to the betterment of society in general. In this country there is a freedom of the press and freedom of religion as well as freedom from religion. This newspaper is filled weekly with church dogma from Christian godtalkers who sell their product to the unsuspecting. There are others who read this paper who don't subscribe to that philosophy even though some don't like to hear it, but that voice does have a right to be heard if this paper is to reflect the area it covers. This could hardly be called a war. Humanists don't attack Christians, but rather challenge a belief system which clinical research does clearly show that religion is hazardous to human mental and physical health. Some people only choose to believe what they have been told to believe. Adults do develop their own concepts on life but childhood lessons remain embedded in the imagination and the core of the emotions. D. Trollope. IMPROVING YOUR ODDS AGAINST CANADA'S #1 KILLER.
