The Citizen, 1993-03-10, Page 8Gold winners Members of the Wingham precision team "The Definite Edge" came home with the gold recently from a competition in St. Thomas. The team, which features skaters from Blyth, Brussels and Wingham also demonstrated their talents at three area skating carnivals prior to the contest. "The Definite Edge", a precision skating team from Wingham, travelled to St. Thomas on Saturday, March 6 for the Sun Country Precision Skating Competition where they competed in the Recreation "A" Division against 19 other teams from Ontario. They placed first in their flight and went on to the finals to capture the gold medal. The Brussels Curling Club hosted a mixed Bonspiel on Saturday, Feb. 27. There were 80 curlers entered, curling three six- end games. The sponsors of the 10 a.m. draw were Cardiff and Mulvey Real Estate and Insurance Ltd., MasterFeeds and Oldfield Pro Hardware. This team of 20 skaters from the Wingham, Brussels and Blyth area is coached by Michelle Blake of RR 2, Brussels. Area members of the team include Stacy Hahn of Brussels and Kimberley Richmond of RR 3, Walton. This busy team recently guest skated at the Wingham Carnival on Feb. 27, Brussels Carnival on Feb. 28 and Blyth Carnival on Mar. 5. Prizes were presented to the following teams: first, 50 points; Brian Alexander, Velma Locking, John Morton and Sue Blake; second, 46.5 points; Mervyn Bauer, Kim Lorimer, Marg Taylor and Donna Bauer, third, 35 points; Bill Shortreed, Jo-Ann McDonald, Carmen Bernard and Heidi PAGE 8. Skating team captures gold 80 curl in bonspiel Brussels Novices win, advance in playoffs The Brussels Novice House- league has just successfully completed its first round of playoffs against a well matched Stephen Township team. Brussels PeeWees defeat Goderich The Brussels Houseleague Pee- Wees defeated Goderich in two of three weekend games. On March 5 in Goderich, Brus- sels' Corey Campbell scored one in the first and in the second, assisted by David Proulx to get the visitors off to a strong start. Trevor Wilson tagged on another, set up by Kevin Mutter, then Campbell got his hat trick, with Clint Fischer getting the assist to finish the Brussels second period onslaught. Goderich man- aged a shot before the period ended narrowing the lead to three. In the third period Goderich man- aged two, while Cory Bragg lit the light for Brussels. Assists went to Continued on page 9 In game one in Stephen Township, the Brussels team was beaten by a score of 4-2. Lee Dilworth of Brussels scored the only goal of the first period, assisted by Chris Blake. Stephen Township came out and tied the score in the second period, then went ahead in the third. Less than a minute later Brussels tied the game 2-2 on a goal by Brian Oldfield. In overtime Stephen played hard and scored the go ahead goal after only two minutes, then finished the scoring with an empty net goal with 31 seconds remaining. A good game played by both teams. Matt McCall and Matt Elliott shared goaltending duty. Game two was played in Brussels Feb. 26 and the fans saw another really good game. Stephen opened the scoring with the only of the first period. Brussels played hard in the second period and Oldfield scored unassisted, then two minutes later Stephen Todd, assisted by Oldfield, put Brussels ahead. Todd came back to tie the game in the second period. The third period saw both teams play hard defensively with no goals were scored. In overtime play Brussels was determined and goals by Blake and Oldfield put Brussels ahead by two. Stephen scored in the last minute of play for a final score for 4-3, Brussels. Again strong goaltending by McCall and Elliott kept the Brussels team in the game. The third game of the series was played in Brussels on March 2. There was a very good crowd out to cheer on the Novice team and the support was really appreciated. The team played a really hard game against the evenly matched Stephen Township team. Oldfield scored the first goal unassisted, then Stephen replied a minute later to the the game at 1-1. Stephen came out in the second to score and stay ahead of Brussels by one until in the last seconds of the period, Oldfield scored to tie them at two each. The third period saw Brussels score twice in five minutes. Goals by Oldfield assisted by Andy VanBeek and Darryl Houston on the first and Todd and Houston on the second put Brussels up by two. It was a completely different story on March 4 when Elma- Logan travelled to Belgralle. Great goaltending by Travis Campbell held the visitors to nine while Bel- grave poured it on to earn 10. The trio of Marks, Knight and Campbell did it again with Marks minutes when Stephen pulled their goalie for the extra man. Tough goaltending by McCall and Elliott kept the Brussels team fired up to play a strong game. They now go on to play Zurich in the next round. - - - notching four goals and five assists, Knight and Campbell each scored three while getting five and six assists respectively. In the third game at Elma Logan on March 6, it was Marks all the way, claiming six of the eight goals. Campbell and Knight split the remainder. Two assists were credited to Campbell as well.
