An adventure beyond your imagination Friday - Thursday March 5 - 11 Friday - Saturday 7 & 9 pm Sunday - Thursday 7:30 pm Saturday & Sunday - Matinee 2 pm By Lisa Boonstoppel-Pot Major renovations may have to be done to fix a problem with freezing pipes at Blyth Memorial Hall, Blyth council fears. Earlier this month, frozen pipes caused extensive water damage to the ceiling in the lobby area. Blyth firefighters responded to the scene when the fire alarms went off. In a letter to council, Fire Chief Paul Josling explained after shut- ting off the alarm, he proceeded to the link (the hallway between the Blyth Festival and memorial Hall) and found water pouring from the ceiling in the lobby area. _ "It was not coming from the sprinkler heads...I believe frozen pipes are the cause of this prob- lem," he stated in the letter. He recommended the hallway ceiling be removed and the sprin- kler pipes be dropped down below the ceiling into the heated space in an attempt to solve the problem of pipes freezing. This recommendation was approved by the Memorial Hall Board and passed onto council. When questioned who would bear the brunt of the cost, Clerk- Treasurer Helen Grubb informed council the village's insurance poli- cy would cover it, subject to $1000 deductible fee. However, if the insurance adjuster found the gener- al contractor of the building was at fault, then the $1,000 would be paid back. Councillor Doug Scrimgeour said he believes the damage was caused by a design fault since the sprinkler pipes shouldn't have been placed above the ceiling. The issue was discussed but council decided not to make any decisions until the insurance adjuster had inspected the site and given a report.
