The second draw of the Brussels
Mixed Curling ended recently.
The top three teams were: first,
54 points, Michael Alexander,
Mary TenPas, Orval Bauer and
Fran Breckenridge; second, 45
points, Ernie Lewington, Velma
Locking, George Zwep and Doug
Dale; third, 37.5 points, Jim
Patterson, Valerie Shortreed, Brad
Speiran and Kim Lorimer.
The Brussels Pee Wee Reps
played the W.O.A.A. Pee Wee D
final this past week against a very
strong Ripley team.
Game one of the best of five
series was played in Ripley
Monday, Feb. 22. Ripley opened
the scoring. Two minutes later
Andrew Exel tied it up, assisted by
Corey Newman and Scott
Clarkson. In the last seconds of the
second Ripley scored again to go
up one. Early in the third Newman
assisted by Chad McCallum and
Exel tied it again, then with 11
seconds left on the clock Ripley
scored to win the game 3-2.
Game two was back in Brussels,
Friday. The game was scoreless
until the second period when
McCallum scored on a breakaway
which was followed by three
Ripley goals.
In the third Ripley got two as did
Brussels. Newman and McCallum
each got one with assists going to
Exel, Josh Beuerman and
McCallum. Final score was 5-3 for
Ripley.
The third game was played in
Ripley Saturday. Ripley scored one
in the first and two in the second
while Brussels was unable to score
until the third when McCallum
assisted by Exel found the net.
Ripley earned the W.O.A.A. Pee
Wee D Championship.
The Brussels squad played solid
hockey the whole series making
Ripley work for every goal. Jamie
Thomas was outstanding in net
facing over 230 shots in the three
games.
Blyth Bantams
Continued from page 7
Rutledge took two whacks at the
puck before finally slipping the
puck in.
Blyth's celebration was short
lived, however, as Normanby
scored two goals 30 seconds apart
with just over one minute left in the
period to tie the game 3-3.
Although Blyth held most of the
play throughout the third, the
period remained scoreless which
set up a 10 minute overtime period.
Blyth notched a goal with just
under three minutes left in the
period. Christopher Howson set up
Ryan Chamney who was left
unattended in the slot for a quick
one-timer. Blyth appeared headed
for victory but Normanby had other
thoughts. A defensive lapse gave
Normanby the break they needed
and they capitalized with the tying
goal with only one second showing
on the clock.
The game ended in a 4-4 draw
which now turns the series into a
six point series with Normanby
leading Blyth three points to one
point. The third game of the series
was played in Blyth on Monday
with the fourth game in Ayton on
March 4.
If Blyth is to win this series they
will need a fifth game which will
be played in Blyth on Wednesday,
March 10 at 8:30 p.m.
The winners of the second draw
of the ladies curling were: first, 38
points, Velma Locking, Doris
Fischer and Marie Stute; second,
37.5 points, Nora Stephenson, Jean
Bewley, Dianne Duskocy, Mary
Bernard; third, 33 points, Fran
Bremner, Brenda Linton and
Sandra Pepper.
The encouragement prize went to
the team of Mary Ann Miners, and
Heidi McClure,
This series was also the Ontario
Minor Hockey Association
(O.M.H.A.) quarter finals which
meant there were only eight teams
left in the Pee Wee D Division
playoffs in Ontario. The boys
played well disciplined hockey to
get this far and are to be
congratulated.
The Pee Wees now go back into
group playoffs and will be
participating in the Young Canada
Tournament in Goderich during
March Break.
