Council discusses coffee jar
By Lisa Boonstoppel-Pot
One of the lengthiest discussions
at Blyth council Feb. 23 was over a
"coffee jar."
The subject came up when Coun-
cillor Doug Scrimgeour indicated
he wanted to discuss the possibility
of logging telephone calls made in
ithe municipal office.
Upon reviewing the office tele-
phone bill, he asked Clerk-Trea-
surer Helen Grubb about a call to a
law firm.
She told him it was the number
of a litigation firm she was dealing
with. Councillor Scrimgeour said
he had no problem with that.
He then made a motion stating
that all personal calls should be
made on an emergency basis only
The Blyth Swinging Seniors met
at 12 noon on Feb. 24 in the Blyth
Memorial Hall for a delicious pot
luck dinner.
After dinner President, Isabelle
Craig welcomed everyone and
opened with 0 Canada. "Happy
Birthday" was sung to Elsie Walsh,
Vera Hesselwood and Lawrence
Plaetzer for their February
birthdays.
The minutes were read by the
Secretary Ferne McDowell and
adopted as read.
Also reports were given by
Lenora Davidson, card reporter and
Graeme McDowell gave the
treasurer's report. Literature was
received from the clerk's office
concerning "Wheels Away". Isabel
will look into this and get more
information to report back. Isabelle

and if necessary, all personal calls
be paid back to the municipality
and not a coffee fund.
"What do you mean by a coffee
fund," asked Ms Grubb. "We don't
have a coffee fund."
She explained the office has a
coffee jar which office staff use to
put money in received for photo-
copying and personal telephone
calls.
"We call it the coffee jar because
it is a coffee jar but it isn't for a
coffee fund," she said.
All the money in the jar is
deposited regularly in the bank, she
added.
Councillor Scrimgeour admitted
he misunderstood the purpose of
the coffee jar but said his idea of
euchre next meeting on March 24.
The dessert will be at 1 p.m. and
cards will follow. Londesboro
Seniors will be guests.
The program committee took
over and Erma Cook called on
Harvey McDowell and Norma Daer
for musical selections. They played
a medley of waltzes.
John Hesselwood gave the laugh
of the day with a poem "Teaching a
Calf to Drink". This brought back
some memories to the farmers in
the group.
Two videos were shown, one on
Hullett Wildlife Conservation and
the other one was "Old Montreal".
This was narrated by Harvey Kirk.
making sure personal calls are paid
back to the municipality is still a
good one.
Councillor Robbie Lawrie said in
addition to paying for personal
calls, a receipt for the money
should also be placed in the coffee
jar.
"It's for Helen's own protection,"
he said.
Councillors Scrimgeour, Lawrie
and Shirley Fyfe expressed
approval of the idea but Ms Grubb
objected to the wording of the
motion.
"The motion reads like we're
being told to do something we've
already been doing," she said.
Councillor Lawrie said, "If it
hadn't been brought to attention, it
could have been all over town that
you were putting money into a cof-
fee fund."
But Ms Grubb asked Councillor
Scrimgeour if he could add a sen-
tence to his motion that would
acknowledge that town employees
had always paid the town back for
personal calls.
However, the motion wasn't
changed and when it came to the
vote, Reeve Dave Lee and Council-
lor Fyfe voted against (Councillor
Steven Sparling wasn't at the meet-
ing), defeating the motion.
