Students participate in French Enrichment day
On Monday, Feb. 15, 60 students
from grades seven, eight and nine
participated in a French Enrichment
Day based on the Quebec
"Camaval" theme.
Activities took place at Clinton
Public School and participants
included 24 students from Clinton
Public School. Four »unit.. e__
On Tuesday, Feb. 18 the grade
six students enjoyed a one hour
play production at Talbot College
in London called Underground
Railroad.
The students were overwhelmed
with the entire play and it really
helped them to understand the
meaning of the Underground
Railway in the days of slavery in
the 1800's.
Since the class is studying the
novel they found it as an excellent
followup.
Thanks goes to Mr. Harrison, the
bus drive and Mr. Livermore.
Also, thanks go to Mrs. Stryker
and Mrs. Walker for accompanying
us on our trip.
VOLLEYBALL
TOURNAMENT
Blyth Public School girls and
boys volleyball team participated in
the annual Central Regional
Volleyball Tournament in Clinton
held on Feb. 6 at C.H.S.S. The girls
finished third behind Clinton and
Hullett while the boys' team placed
first to win their second
consecutive championship.
The coaches, Mrs. Laurie of the
girls' team and Mr. Livermore of
the boys' team, spent lots of time at
noon hours and after school
practising with their respective
teams and are to be congratulated
also.
Both teams displayed good
sportsmanship to go along with
Brussels class
starts
pilot project
By Kevin White
This morning we had a guest
speaker Ms Homuth. Ms Homuth is
the Transition Years co-ordinator
for the Huron County Board of
Education.
Her task at Brussels Public
School was to introduce a new
learning workbook program
"Creative Conflict Solving For
Kids." We will be doing this
program along with Quest. Ms
Homuth will be working with grade
seven/eight every Monday morning
to evaluate the pilot program.
I feel this program will help me
with my fighting at home with my
brother and sister.
Footnote: Last Friday was to be
her second visit to Brussels. She
was involved in a minor fender
bender we are glad she still has a
place in her heart for Brussels.
Vanastra, 10 students each from
Hullett and Blyth Public Schools
and 16 grade nine students from
Central Huron Secondary School.
The latter acted as group captains
and as activity leaders. Facilitators
for the day were Mme W. Laurie,
FSL Liaison teacher, Mme
Gauthier-Neil from C.P.S., and M.
their excellent volleyball skills
level.
The girls team consisted of
Sandra Walsh, Jennifer Brigham,
Kim Lee, Zoey Onn, Christina
Black, April Van Amersfoort,
Margy Stewart, Leanne Bell,
Denome, Toni Richmond,
Amanda Howson, Teresa Smith,
Shawna Walker and Kandice
McNichol.
Ted Griffin from Hullett Public
School.
The day opened with a bilingual
slide presentation on "Carnaval" in
Quebec City. The participants were
divided into "duchds" or teams
named after districts in Quebec
City. After acquainting themselves
with each other "en francais", the
students' first task was to formulate
a French cheer, complete with
actions, for their teams. A "cheer
off" was held with points awarded
for creativity and for loudness.
The entire day was held in
French and included snow
sculpturing, ski board rallies, tug-
of-war, obstacle courses and other
contests in the snow and in the
gym. Teams were awarded points
for each activity. Of course
Bonhomme Carnaval, the Carnaval
mascot, appeared to cheer on the
teams in their activities.
Later in the day Mme Gauthier:
Neil led the students in a "voyage
imaginaire" up the Great Lakes
system by canoe. The students
attempted to "canoe" by scuttling
across the floor of the gymnasium
on their seats, to portage their
canoes while walking together in
line and to climb over difficult
terrain on all fours, all the while
attempting to keep their teams
linked inside their imaginary
canoes.
As a finale the students were led
in French songs by M. Griffin and
Mme Laurie. Mme Laurie
demonstrated how to play the
spoons and had student volunteers
up to play on her "gigeur" or
limberjack toy. M. Griffin provided
the accompaniment on his guitar
and the gym was soon full of the
sounds of traditional French
Canadian folk songs and the
rhythm of 120 spoons.
Most of the students returned
back to their home schools visibly
exhausted from both the physical
and mental efforts they had made
during a day of being immersed in
French. The entire day was a fun
but a very rewarding experience for
both students and their facilitators.
Blyth students participating were:
Nathan Loder, Abigail Ramirez,
William Fotheringham, Craig
Empey, Zoey Onn, April Van
Amersfoort, Christina Black,
Cappy Onn, Shawna Walker and
Skye Lantinga.
Participants from Hullett were:
Krista Black, Jenny Konarski,
Karen Trick, Karen Bergsma,
Trevor Trewartha, Sharon
Baechler, Erica Horbanuik, Katie
MacGregor, Amanda Hanna,
Tatiana Stepan.

SPECIAL EVENTS
It's been a busy time at East
Wawanosh Public School.
Friday, Feb. 4 was Grungy Day
when students got to wear oldest
clothes with greasy or tousled hair.
The Student Council picked a
winner from each class: grade one,
Craig Folkard; grade two, Scott
Folkard; grade three, Lisa Black;
grade three/four, Travis Hopper;
grade four/five, Tim Jerva; grade
five/six, Tom Mullin; grade six/
seven, Melina Hussey and grade
eight, Kendra Leishman. Everyone
had a great time!
On Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 7
and 8, the student council took
orders to send a carnation to
someone special. There were a lot
"of surprised people as 170
carnations were ordered.
On Friday, Feb. 13, the Student
Council hosted a Valentine's Dance.
If you wore red and white you only
had to pay 50 cents instead of 75
cents to get into the dance. If you
decided that you had two left feet,
and did not want the rest of the
school to know, you could go to
Mr. Kerr's room play some games.
As you can see our Student
Council has really been working
hard to help students through those
Winter Blues. They should be
congratulated.
