THE EDITOR,
I would like to respond to Mr.
Trollope's letter of Feb. 10, wherein
he states there is no connection
between pornography and violent
behaviour.
James Dobson PHD, in an
interview with Ted Bundy shortly
before he was executed, says
Bundy began his downward
journey with the accidental
discovery of soft core pornographic
magazines in a roadside dump. This
type of pornography led to hard
core material depicting violence
towards women. He progressed
through more and more violent
material until he killed his first
victim. By the time he was
executed he had raped and
murdered 28 women and girls.
Very few men take an addiction to
pornography this far, but there is
further documented, scientific
evidence of the danger of
pornography.
Psychologist Edward Donner-
stein (University of Wisconsin)
found that even brief exposure to
violent forms of pornography can
lead to anti-social attitudes and
behaviours. (Pornography and
Violence toward Women, 1980).
Dr. Dolf Zimmerman and Dr.
Jennings Bryant showed continued
exposure to pornography had
serious adverse effects on beliefs
about sexuality in general and on
attitudes towards women in
particular. Also pornography
desensitizes people to rape as a
criminal offence. (Pornography
encourages a desire for increasingly
deviant materials which involve
violence, like sadomasochism and
rape. ("The Effect of Erotica
Featuring Sadomasochism and
Bestiality and Motivated Inter Male
Aggressions") Personality and
Social Psychology Bulletin 1981.
Feminist author Diana Russell
notes in her book Rape and
Marriage the correlation between
deviant behaviour (including
abuse) and pornography leads men
and women to experience conflict
and suffering, arid sexual
dissatisfaction.
According to Charles Keating
(Citizens of Decency through
Law), research reveals that 77 per
cent of child abusers of boys and
87 per cent of child abusers of girls
admitted imitating the sexual
behaviour they had seen modelled
in pornography.
Sociologist Murray Straus and
Larry Baron (University of New
Hampshire) found rape rates are
highest in states which have high
sales of pornography and lax
enforcement of pornographic laws.
(Legitimate Violence and Rape: A
Test of the Cultural Spillover
Theory) 1985.
Michigan police detective Darrell
Pape found that of 38,000 sexual
assault cases in Michigan (1956-
1979), pornographic material was
viewed by 41 per cent just prior to
or during the crime. This agrees
with research done by David Scott
who Found that "half the rapists
studied used pornography to arouse
themselves immediately prior to
seeking out a victim."
As far as Mr. Trollope's beliefs
about the Bible go, I used to agree
with him, until I started to read the
Bible.
The Bible was written over a
period of 1500 years by 40 authors
from all walks of life. It was
written in different locations on
three continents and in three
languages. Its subject matter
includes hundreds of controversial
topics which would normally create
opposing opinions but Biblical
authors spoke with harmony and
continuity about God's redemption
of mankind, because its true author
is God who spoke through men as
they were carried along by the Holy
Spirit. (2 Peter 2: 16-21 and 2
Timothy 3: 16). There are no other
10 books by 10 authors all from
one walk of life, one generation,
one language, and just one
controversial subject that could
agree.
Further the Bible states the earth
is a sphere "It is he that sitteth upon
the circle of the earth." (Isaiah 40:
22). The word circle in Hebrew is
Klug which Hebrew scholars say is
•better translated sphere or round.
The book of Isaiah was written
2700 years ago yet men only
discovered the earth was round a
few hundreds years ago.
The Catholic church was wrong
in its condemnation of Galileo just
as many churches have been wrong
and will continue to be wrong
because they are led by imperfect
sinful mankind, but the Bible is
never wrong.
It believe the best way to reduce
violent behaviour is to change the
individual. I agree with Mr.
Trollope that eliminating all
pornography won't eliminate all sex
sin but the aforementioned
evidences indicate it will reduce it.
Pornography is a more than $8
billion industry in North America.
About 1.2 million children per year
are exploited in pornography and
prostitution. And 70 per cent of
pornographic magazines sold end
up in the hands of minors. With the
known effects of this industry it
would be best if it was stopped.
I would like to acknowledge that
much of my information came from
James Dobson Phd. who was on a
U.S. commission on the Study of
Pornography in 1986.
R. Packer.
THE EDITOR,
This is the first time that I have
felt compelled to write a letter to he
editor. I have just arrived home
from a meeting that has left me
completely disillusioned with our
present government. A Task Force
was assembled by our Ministry of
Health to study the availability of
abortion services in the province of
Ontario.
On Dec. 18, 1992, the Task Force
presented its final report of 46
strong recommendations to the
Minister of Health who has already
stated that she WILL endorse the
report. In this report there are 11
violations of Section 2 of the
Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Below are just a few of those
recommendations:
1. strongly recommends that
agencies currently providing
counselling services be forced to
also provide abortion referrals.
2. strongly recommends that the
Ministry of Health by-pass District
Health Council's "needs-
assessment" studies. This would
effectively deny public
participation in health care.
3. strongly recommends that the
Ministries of Health and Education
develop and mandate a
comprehensive (including abortion
education) sexual health curriculum
which will be COMPULSORY!
4. strongly recommends core
"sexual health training" in teacher
training.
5. strongly recommends that
taxpayers foot the bill for an
abortion 1-800 line across Ontario.
6. strongly recommends that
taxpayers should foot the bill for an
annual sex educator's conference.
7. strongly recommends that
there should be an abortion facility
in every community.
8. strongly recommends that
Ontario pressure the federal
government to licence RU486 once
application has been made.
Why should our health care
dollars provided by us, the
taxpayers, be used to further
establish a service that our
government is already providing?
This same government is already
cutting our health care programs
and cannot fully financially provide
for NECESSARY medical
procedures in Ontario. This is
shown to us through the slashing of
all existing health care, closing
hospital beds, putting nurses out of
work, discontinuing drugs for our
seniors, etc.
I feel it is time to make our views
known to our MPP. If your MPP is
NDP ask what he is doing with
your democratic rights. If your
MPP is an opposition party MPP,
then ask why he is silent on such a
flagrant incursion of democratic
rights and freedoms.
Please write to: Ms. Fran
Endicott, Commissioners Office,
Ontario Human Rights
Commission, 12th Floor, 400
University Avenue, Toronto,
Ontario M7A 2R9 and to Minister
of Health, 10th Floor, Hepburn
Block, 80 Grosvenor Street,
Toronto, Ontario. M7A 2C4.
Mrs. Sharon Purves
Wingham, Ontario.
THE EDITOR,
The DIAMONDS is a non-profit
self-help group for physically
challenged people living in Huron
County. Our goal is to provide
friendship, support and information
to our members.
During our first year, we have
successfully raised the awareness
of the people of Huron to the
difficulties that the disabled face on
a daily basis. We have presented
Accessibility Certificates to
businesses that have made their
buildings barrier-free. As well, we
have made local politicians aware
of our interest in what they are
doing on our behalf.
We want to hear from all
physically disabled people in the
County and encourage their family
members to also attend our
meetings. Our next meeting will be
held on Saturday, March 13 at 1
p.m. at the Exeter Lions Youth
Centre.
If you wish more information
about the DIAMONDS and our
activities, please call one of our
co-chairpersons: Ron Airdrie at
482-3463 or Glen McLachlan at
482-9581.
