THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1993 Trend in menswear, European style It used to be that all eyes were on the bride and her bridesmaids. But the men have demanded equal status and now the groom and his party are just as fashionable in their formal wear. Case in point. According to Leonard Goldstein, vice-president of Freeman Formalwear, two new vests have arrived on the scene for '93 weddings. One is cream coloured and the other is black. They're both double-breasted to be worn with a single-breasted tuxedo. "They're tasteful but strong on their own," without needing a lot of colour, he says. Higher fashion trousers, under the labels of Matteo Maas and Harris & Hobb's, are doing away with the satin stripe down the pant leg. Due to popular demand, they're trimming the waistband with it instead, he says. The trend in menswear is "certainly toward European styling," he says. There's still a strong interest in "separate, fancy vests" in "multi-coloured paisleys, neat little subtle colors on a black background, and tartans." "I don't think at any time has black been more defmite," he says. Black has been increasing in popularity since the beginning of the '80s, he adds. According to Ivan Zichy, president and co-owner of Tuxedo Royale, Raffinati's Park Ave white dinner jacket, teamed with black pants with a black lapel on the coat, is a new addition to formal wear for Toasting the happy couple In many cultures - and throughout history - liquor and wine have played a big part in weddings. Even today, a celebration isn't complete until the guests have raised their glasses in a wish for health and happiness. To ensure that the "spirit" lives on, here are some tips for providing liquor at your wedding: CI Decide what you'll serve. First, pick a drink for toasting. Champagne is a wedding classic, but many marriages have been saluted with sparkling cider, bubbling punch or white wine. CI Determine how much you'll need. You can make sure the drinks last as long as the festivities by counting on each guest having two drinks the first hour, one more every hour after that. 0 Place drink tables so that drinkers and non-drinkers mix easily. Have waiters circulate with drink choices - or have both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages at all serving points. 0 Keep a clear head - and make sure your guests do too. the '93 wedding. The Park Ave. "is not for everybody. For those who care to be a little different, it'll be great," he says. According to Michael Silver, president of Syd Silver Formals, "the relaxed finis still important." Black also remains a dominant colour. His company has introduced a line of Italian fabric garments in super 100 all wool. This is the same sort of wool, he says, that's used in fashions by Hugo Boss and Armani. This fabric creates "a very soft, easily draping outfit. It has a nice finish to it when it's tailored," he says.
