Brussels 887-6942 By Sandra Josling On Sunday, Jan. 31, Brussels Branch 218 sponsored 12 youths to attend the Zone C-1 dart day held in Goderich. Brussels members had an excellent day bringing home many trophies. In the Tyke boys' singles division, Ernie Haycock Jr. placed first and Joshua Haycock, third. Tyke girls' singles division winner was Anita Little. In Junior boys' singles division Chris Burkholder placed second and Tom Haig third. Members then teamed for the doubles. In the Tyke division Leslie Elliott and Anita Little placed first, Ernie Haycock and Joshua Haycock second, Rob Burkholder and Lisa Coyne fourth, and Mark Kroll and Dale Martin sixth. In the Junior Division, Jeff Eliott and Johnathon Trollope placed first, Chris Burkholder and Tom Haig fourth. There will be 10 youths advancing to District Youth Brussels Licence Office will be closed Monday, Feb. 22 and Wednesday, Feb. 24 Brussels People The regular meeting of Morning Star Rebekah Lodge took place on Tuesday, Feb. 9 with Noble Grand Gertie Kellington presiding. There was a good attendance. Noble Grand Gertie Kellington reported that six members had attended a dinner in Exeter on Feb. 100 attend Mennonite fundraiser On Sunday, Feb. 7, the worship service at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship was led by Sylvia Cameron. Lena Siegers ministered by singing a solo, "'Tis the Gift to be Simple". A Drama, "Both Sides of the Cup" was performed by several members of the congregation. Alice Knorr gave the message on the topic "Jesus, Joy and Justice." The scripture lesson was Luke 11: 37- 53, and was read by Mary Kuepfer. Children brought gifts of miscellaneous items to share with the Survival Through Friendship House. On Sunday evening some members of the congregation participated in a hymn-sing at Maple Villa in Brussels. The youth met at the church on Saturday for a while before going to Bill and Rosemary Horne's for a time of fellowship and fun. Several committee meetings are planned for the coming week. The Missions Committee is sponsoring a dinner next Saturday evening with proceeds going to Somalia. Communion was held at the Sunday morning service on Feb. 14 at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship. Elwin Garland was worship leader. Elwin also presented the children's story. Pastor Tom Warner preached from Luke 24: 13-35. Destiny Lichty and Amy Demaray provided special music. On Saturday evening a Valentine's chicken supper was sponsored by the Mission Committee. All donations from the supper will be sent to Somalia. Over 100 people attended. Richard McBride from Kitchener spoke and showed slides of a recent trip to several countries. He stressed the concept of hopes in these places. A special Renewal/Revival weekend is planned for March 3-7. Harold White from Minneapolis and Alex and Grace McCready from Burlington will be the guest speakers for this weekend. 3 to meet the president of the Rebekah Assembly as she paid her first visit to the district. It was decided to host a small dinner in the Lodge rooms for the president at 5 p.m. on March 23 when she makes her official visit to Brussels. She will be accompanied by District Deputy President Joan Bernard. The next meeting will be held on Feb. 23. Former Brussels resident Lawrie Cousins, now of Redwood Lane, London has recently retired after 25 years with the Dairy Inspection Branch field office. Lawrie was previously employed in the local family business, Cous- in's Creamery. Once again Brussels area people need not agonize over their income tax return because they can't afford to hire help. Jill Seeds, of Brussels and Karen Schmalz, both employees of Rev- enue Canada, will be at the Brus- sels Public Library on Feb. 20 and March 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to do your tax return, free of charge. All you need are your receipts. If you have already completed your return, Mrs. Seeds and Ms Schmalz will check them for you. The service is 100 percent confi- dential. Last year when the two came up with the idea Mrs. Seeds saw it as a way for her to give something back to her community. However, she stresses that people must come to the library. If unable to attend they can drop off the papers. Also, she will be working at the Goderich UIC office on Thursdays and the Stratford office on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 3:30 as part of a govern- ment move to make services acces- sible to people by bringing them to one spot, she said. At those places, while the service is free, she will only be permitted to provide assis- tance; completing the returns is not allowed. Darts in Elora on March 21. Mel Harper, Provincial Service Officer of the Royal Canadian Legion Service Bureau Office in London will be visiting the area during the week of March 3. Any veterans, ex-servicemen or women or dependents wishing information, advice or assistance regarding war disability, pensions, treatment of entitled veterans, or war veterans and widows allowance should contact the branch or Ted Elliott prior to Feb. 10.
