Though many fields were brown with lack of snow, the club's well-groomed trails were still blanketed with white and made for an enjoyable day of snowmobiling through picturesque woods and open spaces. Wawanosh sets dog license fees OFSC promotes safety Always drive with a buddy is the advice the B&W Trailblazers snowmobile club is giving to motorists during Snowmobile Safe- ty Week, Feb 6-13. Club Vice-President Mark Gropp said driving with a buddy is essen- tial when snowmobiling. Other safety tips he provided were not to drive faster than you can see and be aware of snow con- ditions. "Snow conditions can change a couple of times on a day," he warns. "Sometimes you may be able to go into a turn with no prob- lem but as it gets colder, it can get icy and next time you could upset your machine in that same corner." The Ontario Ministry of Tourism and Recreation is also urging snow- mobilers to drive safe. In a press release, the Ministry reveals at least 16 people have lost their lives in snowmobile mishaps this winter. Fourteen of those killed were males. Alcohol and thin ice played major roles in the accidents, states the release. "Two newlyweds were killed on their honeymoon in St. Charles, southeast of Sudbury when the driver left a groomed trail and crashed head-on with a rock wall. A 21-year-old man was killed when he was accidently run over by a Huron County Council approved issuing a job offer to an Ottawa woman to become the new clerk- administrator of the county. Jocelyne Murray, a Graduate of Carleton University has held posts with the federal government, and in various capacities for the city of Ottawa. She was chosen from among more than 70 applicants, seven of whom were interviewed. Grey Township Council held its regular meeting on Feb. 1 and had no objection to a severance application of Glen Johnston, Part Lot 15, Conc. 1. Council endorsed a resolution from the Township of Gordon which recommends that the Minister of the Environment promote refundable cans and bottles by the beverage industry. Council authorized a grant of $300 to the Brussels Agricultural snowmobile driven by his 17-year- old brother in Derby Township, west of Owen Sound. A young woman lost her life in the Huntsville area when her bare head struck the ground after she fell off the back of a snowmobile during an accident. She would probably be alive today had she worn a helmet," says the release. Other snowmobilers were killed by falling through ice on Georgian Bay. "I'm saddened to hear that 16 people were killed but what makes it more tragic is that these accidents were easily preventable," Ontario Minister of Culture, Tourism and Recreation Anne Swarbrick said. "It is vital that everyone, from novices to regular riders adopt a safety-first attitude." Riding safe means when riding a snowmobile don't drink, or speed, stick to groomed trails, avoid trav- elling on lakes, follow the rules of the trail, carry an emergency kit and at all times wear reflective clothing and a helmet. In conjunction with Snowmobile Safety Week, the provincial gov- ernment announced that by March 31, $2.1 million will have been spent on trail development across Ontario under the SNO-TRAC pro- gram. In addition to receiving a salary of $68,000, she will be given $5000 in moving expenses. The offer was extended after a lengthy closed-door session requested by councillors after they were told they couldn't be told in open session exactly how much Ms Murray was being offered. "I can't believe it is not public informa- tion?" Goderich Reeve Bill Clifford said. Society for the 1993 fall fair.
