Recognize the early warning signs Heart Attack • Heavy pressure, discomfort, burning, or a squeezing sensation in the centre of the chest. • Pain may spread to arms or neck and may come and go. • Shortness of breath. • Nausea, vomiting or Indigestion.. Weakness, fatigue, greyish skin colour. Stroke • Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg on one side of the body. • Loss of speech, or trouble In speaking or In understanding speech. • Unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness or sudden falls. • Dimness, loss of vision or double vision in one eye. If you experience these symptoms In someone else: • Take charge. The victim will likely deny what Is happening. • Insist that the victim stop all activity and sit or Ile down. • Ask if the victim Is being treated for heart disease or stroke. If so, help with medication. • Call your local emergency number. • Get the victim to the nearest hospital. You must act immediately! Half of all heart attack deaths occur before the victim gets to hospital. Improve your odds... Five steps to a healthier heart The good news is that, to a large degree, heart disease and stroke are preventable. The key Is healthy lifestyle choices_ 1. Be Smoke-Free If you smoke, you greatly Increase your chances of suffering from heart disease or stroke. Ask your physician about how to quit. Protect your children by talking to them and about the dangers of smoking. And demand smoke-free work spaces, restaurants and other public places. 2. Make Healthy Food Choices Choose lower fat dairy products, leaner meats and foods prepared with little or no fat. Limit salt, alcohol and caffeine. Eat a healthy diet, and feel great! 3. Know Your Blood Pressure You could have high blood pressure without knowing it - there are no obvious symptoms. The only way to know is to have your blood pressure taken. High blood pressure can lead to stroke or heart disease, but it's controllable. If your blood pressure is high, follow your doctor's advice. 4. Lead an Active Life Regular physical activity helps your heart and blood vessels work better. Exercise also helps to maintain a healthy body weight and control your cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Choose activities that are accessible and enjoyable. Rediscover the fun of physical activity, for your heart's sake. 5. Take Time to Relax By managing the stress in your life, you reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Try relaxation techniques, stress reduction programs or regular physical activity. Learn to set priorities and manage your time. Don't try to be superhuman!
