Five steps to a healthier heart
The good news is that, to a large degree, heart disease and stroke
are preventable. The key Is healthy lifestyle choices_
1. Be Smoke-Free
If you smoke, you greatly Increase your chances of
suffering from heart disease or stroke. Ask your physician about
how to quit. Protect your children by talking to them and about the
dangers of smoking. And demand smoke-free work spaces,
restaurants and other public places.
2. Make Healthy Food Choices
Choose lower fat dairy products, leaner meats and foods
prepared with little or no fat. Limit salt, alcohol and caffeine. Eat a
healthy diet, and feel great!
3. Know Your Blood Pressure
You could have high blood pressure without knowing it -
there are no obvious symptoms. The only way to know is to have
your blood pressure taken. High blood pressure can lead to stroke
or heart disease, but it's controllable. If your blood pressure is
high, follow your doctor's advice.
4. Lead an Active Life
Regular physical activity helps your heart and blood
vessels work better. Exercise also helps to maintain a healthy
body weight and control your cholesterol and blood pressure
levels. Choose activities that are accessible and enjoyable.
Rediscover the fun of physical activity, for your heart's sake.
5. Take Time to Relax
By managing the stress in your life, you reduce the risk of
heart disease and stroke. Try relaxation techniques, stress
reduction programs or regular physical activity. Learn to set
priorities and manage your time. Don't try to be superhuman!
