After finishing regular season with a record of 14 wins, one loss and one tie, the Pee Wees played their first W.O.A.A. playoff series A move to increase the cost of obtaining a severance in Huron County has been referred back to the executive committee for further study. At the Feb. 4 meeting of county council, the recommendation that the severance fee be returned to the $1000 level (which it had been at until last year) was send back to the committee so more figures on the actual cost of processing and appli- cations could be provided. Tom Cunningham, acting chair- man of the executive committee, explained that the consent fees were designed to cover the cost of running the portion of the planning and development office that pro- cessed the applications. With the reduction of the fee to $500 and the decline in the number of severence applications last year, the depart- ment is facing a $97,000 deficit on its operations. The move to increase the fees shocked some councillors. "I felt they just got it down to where it should be," said Leona Armstrong, reeve of Grey. The situation is further compli- cated because seven of the 26 against Howick. On Jan. 29 Brussels hosted Howick for the first game of the best of three series. Brussels scored early in the first period and continued to dominate the entire game. The Brussels strong team municipalities have their own con- sent-granting authority but still use the county department to process the applications. An agreement would have to be reached with all seven municipalities to come up with an agreeable fee. But council- lors were skeptical that such an agreement would be reached. "I can't imagine those seven munici- palities agreeing," said Bill clifford, Reeve of Goderich. Reeve Cunningham said there are varying costs for various munici- palities. Under the system if the municipality charges $300 now then the new fee would be $800. Some councillors suggested all municipalities should have to use the county system. "If everyone was in on it the $500 would be enough (to pay the costs)," said Jack Coleman, reeve of deputy- reeve of Stanley. Grant Stirling, reeve of Goderich Township wondered if the $1000 fee would be charged to separate farms that had originally been sepa- rate properties but had been linked Two area skaters and their part- ners have returned home after par- ticipating in the National competition this past week at Copps Coliseum, Hamilton. Peter MacDonald, 19 of RR3, Brussels and his partner of three years Suzanne Killing of Tavistock competed for the first time in the Senior Dance Pairs event at Nation- als and finished 10th overall. Mr. MacDonald said he and Ms The Belgrave Atoms travelled to Goderich on Jan. 30 and walked away with a 4-1 victory over the hosting Hawks Goderich hit the boards first with a shot in net at 7:39 in the first, but Tom Mullen knocked one in unas- sisted to tie things before the period ended. The third period was all Belgrave starting when Justin Black set up Aaron Bakker to give the visitors the lead. Then Tyler Fenton nudged one in off a play by Kevin Hopf who then grabbed the final goal for his team off a play by Craig Marks and Bakker. It was a different story on Feb. 4 however, when Belgrave played host to a strong Stephen Twp. team. Goalie Matt Snow had a busy time in net with the opposition driving 10 shots past him. Scoring the two Belgrave goals was Justin Campbell and Kevin effort resulted in an 8-3 victory over Howick. On Feb. 3 Brustels travelled to Howick hoping to clinch the series with a win. Brussels dominated play in the first period but were because they had later been pur- chased by the same owner. He was informed it would be. Bill Vanstone, reeve of Colbome defended increasing the charge. If $500 was charged the taxpayers would have to pay the cost for the other $500, he said. Since the per- son getting the severance usually benefits, it would mean ordinary taxpayers are subsidizing develop- ers. Pat Down, reeve of Usbome sug- gested that if the number of consent applications was going down, per- haps the staff of the Planning and Development department should be reduced. But Dr. Gary Davidson, planning director said history shows consents to be cyclical, reflecting the economy. There were only 65 applications last year, simi- lar to the early 1980s when there were only 60. But when things improved later in the 1980s the number of consent applications swelled. Already in 1993 the num- ber of applications has increased greatly and the projection is there will be 100 applications, he said. Killing felt the original program could have gone better, but both were pleased with their compulsory and free programs. A small slip in the original program could have made a difference in their final placing. Now the couple are preparing new material to be performed this month as special guests of the Brussels Figure.Skating Club's Car- Hopf. Campbell got the assist on the second goal. Two days before, Brussels trav- elled to the Belgrave arena to face- off against the Atoms and came away with a hard won 6-3 victory. Trevor Wilson got things going for Brussels in the first period off a play by Ryan Smith and Steve Old- field. Then two minutes later Matthew McLellan, assisted by Joshua Gropp gave the visitors some insurance. Matt Snow set up Tim Robinson for the first goal of the second peri- od narrowing the Brussels edge to one, but Brussels retaliated when Wilson off a breakaway tallied the third Brussels marker. Just 30 sec- onds later Wilson scored his hat trick goal when Mark Stevens and Oldfield combined to set him up. Then with 3:16 remaining in the second Wilson lit the marker one unable to score until late in the period when Andrew Exel popped one in assisted by Corey Newman. In the second Eitel scored his second on a breakaway giving Brussels a 2-0 lead. Brussels came alit • a little sluggish in the third period and Howick took full advantage scoring two goals to tie the game. - The game then went into a 10 minute overtime period. Howick scored first in overtime to go ahead. Brussels then started driving to the net and Chad McCallum scored assisted by Exel halfway through the period to once again tie things up. Then with 3:44 left on the clock New man found the net assisted by McCallum to give them the go ahead goal. The game and series ended with Brussels defeating Howick 4 - 3. The Brussels Pee Wee Reps now continue to the next round in W.O.A.A. playoffs in a series against Drayton beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. in Drayton. nival. Fifteen-year-old Mark Shepherd and his partner Debbie MacKenzie competed at the Nationals for the second year in the Novice Dance Pairs event. Mr. Shepherd's mother said the pair was a little disappoint- ed with their eighth place finish as they had had a good year against many of the same skaters and had expected to do a little better. last time putting his team up by four. Robinson nudged in the second Belgrave goal unassisted halfway through the third. Then Gropp and Joel Kellington combined to set McLellan up for his second red light of the game. Kevin Hopf tagged on one more for the home team off a play by Justin Campbell and Snow at 5:29. Goalies were Travis Campbell for Belgrave and Nathan Conley for Brussels. On Feb. 5 the Brussels team took on Zurich in Brussels. The closely matched team went neck and neck to a 3-2 victory for Brussels.
