Brussels Midget recovers in
hospital from game injury
The Brussels Novice House-
league team has been very busy the
last week, playing four games in
four days.
On Thursday, Feb. 4, they played
a regular league game against
Elma-Logan in Monkton defeating
them 6 - 4. Brussels began the
scoring with a goal from Brian
Oldfield, assisted by Andy Van
Beek. Elma-Logan tied the game
only three minutes later, but
Brussels replied with a goal by
Darryl Houst, assisted by Matthew
Clarkson to close the first period.
The second period saw a goal

creamed Goderich Sunday in
Goderich 4-0 after beating Huron
Park the night before.
In Huron Park, it was a tie game
in the first period and early in the
second but Brussels got their
rhythm in the third scoring five
goals for an 8-4 win.
Goals and assists were earned by
Corey Campbell, Clint Fischer,
Trevor Wilson, Cory Bragg, David
Proulx and Jeff Finch.
In Sunday's game, Brussels start-
ed off with a bang in the first peri-
od with goals by Proulx, assisted
by Campbell; Bragg and Camp-
bell.
Campbell struck again in the
third period to give Brussels four
goals.
from each team. Oldfield scored
unassisted.
The third period saw a tired but
determined Elma-Logan team come
out to play hard. Brussels scored
twice with Mark Hunter scoring on
a pass from Van Beek. Oldfield
scored with assists to Chris Coulter
and Stephen Todd. Elma-Logan
came back with two quick goals to
bring them within one of Brussels.
Oldfield scored again with only
one second on the clock. Final
score 6 - 4.
Friday was the beginning of the
Howick Super Series Houseleague
Tournament. There were 18 teams
participating.
Brussels first game was against
Lucknow on Friday at 7 p.m.,
which they defeated 2-0. Both
goals went to Oldfield. Tim
Harrison and Matt Elliott shared
goaltending duties for the Elma-
Logan game and the Lucknow
game.
The second game was Sunday
morning at 8 a.m. against
Teeswater. Brussels again was
victorious with the final score
being 7-1. Goals were scored by
Van Beek, Houston, Matt McCall
and Oldfield with four. Scott
McDonald played in goal.
They played the third and final
game at 10 a.m. Sunday morning
against Grimsby. The final score
was tied at two apiece. A strong
game was played by both teams
and good goaltending by Matt
McCall. Goals were scored by Van
Beek and Marc Fisher.
The Novices last home game is
Saturday, Feb. 13 against Bayfield.
Brussels Midgets played in the
Ripley Lions Hockey Tournament
on Jan. 30. The Brussels team was
sponsored by the Brussels Lions
Club. In the first game Brussels lost
to Flesherton in overtime 7-6.
Brussels fell behind 5-2 after the
first two periods, but stormed back
in the third period to take a 6-5
lead. Flesherton tied the score with
seven seconds left in the game and
then went on to win in overtime.
Brussels player Brian Van
Steelandt was injured during this
game. Linda Keffer and Ruth
Machan took him to Kincardine
Hospital. He was later transferred
The Brussels Bulls finished their
'92-'93 season in third place after
losing 9-4 to the Barons Friday
night in Hanover. The Wingham
Ironmen, with whom the Bulls
were tied in points were awarded
second place based on most wins.
Friday night the Bulls enjoyed an
excellent first period shutting out
the Barons while scoring twice
from Jeff McKee shorthanded, and
Jason Baier on the powerplay for a
2-0 lead. However, reality set in as
the Barons scored five times in the
second and added four more in the
third period while outshooting
Brussels 35-14. Josh Alexander and
Brian Zabel completed the Bulls
scoring.
Sunday afternoon the Bulls took
a 1-0 series lead over Walkerton
with a 5-4 double overtime win
against the Blackhawks. Game two
in the best of five series is
Wednesday in Walkerton, game
three is in Brussels' aturday at 5:00
and game four is in Walkerton
Sunday afternoon.
Jeff McKee knocked in a Brian
Zabel rebound 10 minutes into
sudden-death overtime Sunday for
the game one victory.
Steve Fritz scored twice while
Ted Sills and Brian Zabel scored
singles in a game that saw
Walkerton force overtime with a
tying goal at the 15:44 mark of the
third period, then force sudden
death overtime with a goal with
2:17 remaining in a 10-minute
overtime period. Jeff McKee and
Steve Fritz were named Formosa
first and second stars while
Walkerton goaltender Jon
Biesenthal with 44 saves, was the
third star.
Saturday night at the league
banquet in Mount Forest Nate
Bender was named Western Jr. C
Rook ie of the Year while Jonathan
Lane was a co-winner of the Most
Sportsmanlike Player with Brad
Murray of Hanover.
The Barons claimed the
remainder of the awards with
league scoring champion Jeremy
Franks being named M.V.P.; Keith
MacMillan voted Best Defenceman
and the goaltending duo of Shawn
Hagan and Don Spittal having the
Belgrave Novices
trounce Bayfield
Great goaltending by Travis
Campbell kept the opposition's
goals to a minimum for the Bel-
grave Novices Jan. 31.
Belgrave was playing Bayfield in
Blyth and managed to score 10
goals compared to Bayfield's four.
Game points were earned by
Craig Marks with three goals and
two assists, Curtis Knight with one
goal and two assists, Justin Camp-
bell with four goals and one assist,
T. J. Marks with two assists and
Nathan Spivey with one assist.
Spivey and T.J. Marks are Tykes
but played an excellent game for
the Novices.
to Owen Sound where he
underwent surgery to suture his
spleen. Brian's father Frank, of RR
1, Blyth said they are hoping he
will be moved to Clinton hospital
later this week. Mr. Van Steelandt
said they will be keeping a close
eye on Brian and he has already
been told there can be no sports for
a time as he must let his spleen heal
properly.
In the second game Brussels
played a team from Hamilton. A
solid defensive effort produced a 2-
1 victory.
In the consolation final Brussels
faced Lucknow. The team played
poorly in the first period and fell
lowest goals against.

pace in the second and third periods
but went down to an 8-3 defeat.
The team was sponsored for the
tournament by the Lions Club.
On Sunday, Jan. 31 the Midgets
began their WOAA playoffs
against Howick. The Brussels boys
seemed to be flat against a strong
Howick team. Brussels lost all
three playoff games to Howick and
are now eliminated from WOAA
playoffs.
