Blyth Public School president Nathan Loder and treasurer Abigail Ramirez accepted a cheque
from Blyth Legion Branch #420 treasurer Donna Govier and Nevada Chair Brad Montgomery
last Tuesday on behalf of the school's Grade 4 and 5 classes which will make use of the
money to take swimming lessons. The $1198.40 cheque covers transportation and
registration costs of swimming lessons at Vanastra Recreation Complex. There would have
been no swimming lessons this year for the students without the Legion donation.

Seniors
meet
About 40 Blyth Swinging
Seniors met in the Blyth Memorial
Hall on Jan. 27 to enjoy a delicious
pot luck dinner.
President Isabelle Craig called
the meeting to order. 0 Canada was
sung with Ella Richmond at the
piano.

Public School, with their teacher,
Mrs. Battye came to entertain the

there are several tables for smokers
which make up the majority of
bingo players.
The weekly bingo game has been
a profitable venture for the Lions in
the past and allowed the Lions to
support various community causes.
The issue came up at Blyth coun-
cil's Jan. 26 meeting and Reeve
Dave Lee said he had no problem
with the arena being smoking or
non-smoking but he felt a non-
smoking arena made more sense.
"The mandate of the arena is to
provide recreation so how can we
allow smoking? It doesn't seem to
match with recreation," he said.
Councillor Shirley Fyfe, who
chairs the Memorial Hall Board,
said the issue had been discussed at
their last meeting but it was decid-
ed to delay the decision.
"We're going to wait and see
what happens at the arena," she
says. "It's possible we'll have a des-
ignated smoking area instead of
having the whole hall non-smok-ing..
Hebo Siertsema, chair of the
arena board said health reasons and
government pressure were behind
the previous decision to make the
arena non-smoking.
Mr. Salverda volunteered his ser-
vices at the meeting of Jan. 26
which has ended a long search for
someone to lead the committee.
In addition to Mr. Salverda's
appointment, Gwen Papple volun-
teered for secretary.
With the crucial issue finally
being resolved, the committee was
able to forge ahead with plans for
the event, which it was agreed will
be a condensed version of previous
years. Mr. Salverda said the festival
will be a day-and-a-half long,
beginning with the kick-off parade
on Saturday, June 26 and winding
up with the fishing derby at Rad-
ford's on SUnday. "The focus will
be more on family games and
entertainment in the park," said Mr.
Salverda. We will sort of be pulling
it back into the community and it
"They're starting to push for non-
smoking at the county level," he
says. When the motion came up, it
was voted on and the result was
5-4 for non-smoking.
It was a close vote then and when
the issue was raised again at Mon-
will be a cost-effective day for the
whole family to have fun."
Further details will be worked
out at the next meeting, which will
be held on Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in
the reception room of the Masonic
Hall in Blyth. One of the issues
addressed will be fmding a treasur-
er for the festival. As yet, there has
been no one coming forward to
take on the task. "We are hoping
when people see it's not that diffi-
cult they'll come forward," said Mr.
Salverda. "So far with the support
of people who have served on the
previous year's committees and the
new ones coming forward it sounds
like the committee will be a good
mix."

In a press release, the board said
they would be calling a meeting
with other community centres in
Huron County to research and dis-
cuss smoking policies.
