Balls away A Blyth Yogi and Middlesex Red Baron seem frozen in place as the broomball ball bounces away during a game between the two at this weekend's Blyth Broomball League tournament in Blyth. The Yogi's didn't go on to win any titles but other local teams did. The Universal team of Blyth were runner-ups for the Men's A, the 8th Line team of Blyth won the Men's B while the Lost Sheep of Blyth captured the Ladies B title when they beat the Rebels of Blyth. Twenty-four teams competed in the tournament from as a far as Toronto, Hagersville and Middlesex. Blyth opened with wins over the Kitchener Renegades 6-2 and Zurich 3-0, then beat St. Clements 4-1 in the tourney quarter-finals before bowing out to Ayton-Normanby Township 2-1 in the semi-finals. Blyth opened the tournament against Kitchener Jan. 15 by scoring four unanswered third period tallies. Scoring for Blyth were Christopher Howson, with two, Chris Stewart, Jason Rutledge, Mike Salverda and Brad Anderson. Assists went to Greg Toll, Brian McNichol and Mike Salverda with two each, with single assists going to Chris Stewart, Jason Rutledge, Brian Marks and Peter Craig. Brian McNichol won Player of the Game honours for Blyth. Chris Lee led Blyth to victory in their second game as he shut down the Zurich offence. After a scoreless first, Peter Craig scored the only second period goal with an unassisted effort. Brian McNichol assisted on the game winner four minutes into the third as Mike Salverda notched a power play marker. Blyth used their special teams for their third goal four minutes later as Chris Stewart pounced on a Zurich miscue to score an unassisted short-handed goal. Player of the game honours went to Peter Craig. Brussels Midgets had the lead but a second period goal spree gave Zurich the win on Jan. 18. Brussels travelled to Zurich for the game and started with a bang with two first-period goals by Brett Clarkson and Ryan Finch, assisted These two wins gave Blyth their round robin win and advanced them to the quarter finals against a big, aggressive St. Clements squad. St. Clements opened the scoring but Blyth tied the game with a late first period power play goal. Jonathan Collins and Chris Stewart set up Brian McNichol's screened slap shot. Brad Anderson and Brian McNichol then set up the game winner with one minute left in the second frame as Chris Stewart tapped in a pass at the edge of the crease. Stewart then added to Blyth's lead 55 seconds into the third period after passes from Jonathan Collins and Brad Anderson. One and a half minutes later Jason Rutledge deposited a rebound from Peter Craig's point shot into the net. Michael de Jong went the distance between the pipes and Jonathan Collins earned Player of the Game. In the semi-finals against Normanby Township on Sunday afternoon, Blyth came up against a red-hot goaltender who was virtually unbeatable. Normanby opened the scoring late in the second period and upped the count to 2-0 midway through the third. Blyth finally lit the red light with 33 seconds remaining and the goalie on the bench for an extra attacker. Chris Stewart won the faceoff to Brian McNichol who set up Jonathan Collins' hard blue line drive. Although Blyth responded with another offensive by Mike Bromley and Wayne Alexander. Zurch came back with a goal minutes into the second period but Brussels retaliated with a goal by Bromley, assisted by Alexander. Blyth completed their league schedule on Jan. 18 at home as they blew out Elma-Logan 13-0. Chris Lee notched another shutout although he was hardly tested. Brian McNichol led the scoring parade as he scored four goals and two assists. Michael de Jong was right behind as he notched a hat trick to go with two assists. Brian Marks had a pair of goals as well as a pair of assists while single goals were scored by Chris Stewart, Jason Rutledge, Christopher Howson and Peter Craig. Additional assists went to Rutledge with four, Howson and Henry Bos with three each, Stewart and Craig with two each and Greg Toll with a single helper. This win ended an undefeated league regular season as Blyth recorded 17 straight wins. The second season is all that is left as the Bantams await a playoff opponent. The weather finally got cold enough for Belgrave Arena to get their natural ice on Jan. 11. After-school activities from 4 - 5 p.m. include Shinney Hockey on Mondays and Wednesdays and Figure Skating/Free skating on Thursday. Moms and Tots are Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30. Public skating is held each Sat. and Sun. afternoon from 2 - 4 p.m. " A very successful family skating night was held Saturday, Jan. 16 with the arena ice surface filled to capacity. Another family skate will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, weather permitting. Minor hockey games for Tyke and Novice are usually scheduled Saturday mornings from 10 - 12, Ironmen hold Bulls to 6-6 tie The Brussels Bulls scored four third period goals including two in the game's final 20 seconds for a 6- 6 tie with the Wingham Ironmen Sunday afternoon in Brussels. The tie gives the Bulls a two point lead over Wingham for second place with each club having two games to play. Brian Zabel opened the scoring Sunday before Wingham replied twice for a 2-1 first period lead. Nate Bender tied the score early in the second but two powerplay goals gave Wingham a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. Josh Alexander and Ted Sills traded third period goals with Wingham's Chris Stevenson (his third of the game) and Steve Michie (with 1:35 left on the clock) before Nate Bender's second of the game with 20 seconds remaining, set the stage for Greg McNevan's game tying goal with one second showing on the clock for a final 6-6 tie. Steve Fritz set up three goals for the Bulls while Ted Sills registered two assists along with his goal. Despite the intense rivalry only 11 minor penalties were called. The Formosa Three Stars were Chris Stevenson and Steve Schwartzen- truber of Wingham and Greg McNevan of the Bulls, who was the second star. The Bulls are at home Sunday to Grand Valley for their only game of the week. Friday night in Goderich the Gulls guarantee of a second place finish was dealt a serious blow when the Sailors held Brussels to a 7-7 tie. Despite two goals from Jamie Williams and singles by Greg McNevan, Jeff Coulter, .Brad Carter, Jeff McKee and Alex Motley, the Bulls could not hold period leads of 3-2 and 5-3 as well as a 7-5 lead with eight minutes remaining in the game. with Atoms playing home games Tuesdays at 7 p.m. The Belgrave Community Centre Board held their monthly Euchre Tournament on Jan. 15 with 28 tables in attendance. Shots ring in Blyth, Beigrave show-down Shots were ringing off the goal posts in a game between the Bel- grave and Blyth Atoms in Belgrave Jan. 19. However, both teams' goalies were doing their jobs and the final score was 2-1 for Belgrave. Belgrave had the edge this game because they were passing and playing better positional hockey. Goal scorers for Belgrave were Craig Marks, assisted by Matthew Cameron and Tim Robinson, assist- ed by Aaron Bakker. Brent Sauve, assisted by Ross Clark, scored for Blyth.
