Horticulturalists make flowers

WMS discuss Christianity
The annual meeting of the
Auburn Horticultural Society was
held at the Community Hall on
Wednesday, Jan. 13 with a good
attendance. Ell Lapp led in the
singing of Grace and refreshments
were served by the executive.
The President Ann Vincent
chaired the meeting and welcomed
all. Members had three pieces of
different colours of plasticine from
which they were to make a flower
of some sort.
Secretary Dorothy Grange read
the report on the work and doings
of the society in 1992. The new list
of directors was given for the term
The Afternoon Unit of the
U.C.W. met on Jana 11 at the home
of Mrs. Harold Vincent with an
attendance of 12. Mrs. Audrey
Fenton in charge.
After a short meditation and
prayer the minutes of the last
meeting were read and adopted and
Mrs. Mary Hunter read the
treasurer's report.
Mrs. Kay Roberts reported on the
cards for sick and shut-ins and Mrs.
Janisa Coultes reported on the
"Upper Room" with one left over.
Mrs. Vincent gave out the outline
for 1993.
Mrs. Dorothy Coultes led the
worship opening with the hymn
"Another Year is Dawning".
"The New Birth", in the brown
hymn book was read responsively
The W.M.S. held their meeting at
the home of Mrs. Alice Nicholson,
who opened with a call to worship,
"Standing at the Portal".
Mrs. Louie Scott read scripture
from Matthew and Mrs. Ivy
Cloakey led in prayer. Roll call was
answered with something to pray
for in the new year. The secretary's
report was read by Mrs. Margaret
Siertsema and the treasurer's report
was given by Mrs. Ivy Cloakey.
The next meeting will be held
Feb. 11 and the ladies were
reminded of the annual meeting in

at euchre
Ten tables were in play at the
weekly euchre which was held in
the W.I. Hall, Belgrave,
Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Winners were: high lady, Mrs.
Robert Grasby; low lady, Mrs.
Helen Martin; lone hands, lady,
Mrs. Jack Taylor; closest score to
60, Mrs. George Michie; high man,
Robert Grasby; low man, Jim
Coultes; lone hands, man, Mrs.
Mabel Wheeler (playing as a man)
and closest score to 60, Jack
Taylor.

only one change in the slate of
officers.
The new business was then
discussed. It was noted Arbour Day
will start around April 22. There
was a discussion regarding where
to place a new park bench and that
permission will be needed to do so.
Several places were mentioned.
A quilt block is to be done for the
convention in May. Jane Stryker
and Lou Issac will plan this.
Anne read a piece about planting
a tree in 1993 and this was also
discussed.
followed by the story of a teenager
who had endured many checkups in
his young life.
After prayer and the Lord's
Prayer the hymn "0 God Our Help
in Ages Past", was sung.
Mrs. Janisa Coultes had Bible
Study from Matthew 7: 15-20;
"Beware of false prophets come to
you in sheep's clothing," and also
from Barclay's book of Matthew.
For Mission Study, Mrs. Kay
Roberts used the Mandate story
"Poverty and Strength in Chili".
One woman raised in a family of
eight had to quit school to help.
They could hardly grow enough to
feed them and rarely enough
money to buy food. Kay read
several segments from the Bible
that related somewhat to poverty.
Wingham next Monday, Jan. 18.
Twenty-four sick and shut-in visits
were recorded.
Alice Nicholson read a story on
the beginning of the Salvation
Army. Kettles for charity started in
1895 in England. Margaret
Siertsema read, "Time is a Gift
from God" and "Anywhere is a
Place of Prayer".
Mrs. Nicholson read "God's
Promises" to close the meeting and
a lunch and social time was
enjoyed.

wins 50/50 draw
There were nine tables of euchre
in play at the Ethel Hall on Monday
evening hosted by Dorothy Dil-
worth.
Winners were: high lady, Violet
Smith; high man, Bill Dobson; low
lady, Hazel McKenzie; low man,
Keith Turnbull; most lone hands,
Jean Rolof, Ken Crawford.
Helen Cullen won the 50/50
draw. The next euchre wil be Jan.
25 at 8:30 p.m.
Everyone showed their plasticine
flower and named them. The
programs and lunch commit-tees
were chosen.
Rev. Ross reads
scripture from
John at Knox
Rev. Paul Ross conducted the
service at Knox United Church and
Bernice Gross was organist. Rev.
Ross introduced his guest, and
long-time friend, Mr. Richard Bain,
a licensed lay preacher in the
United Church.
Invitation to worship was sung.
Rev. Ross gave the prayers of
approach and confession and
assurance of God's Pardon
followed by hymn "Come
Christians Join To Sing."
Rev. Ross had conversation with
the children and the Lord's Prayer
was repeated by all and the
children's chorus "Jesus Bids Us
Shine" was sung.
The hymn "Lead Kindly Light"
was sung. Rev. Ross read scripture
from John and Richard Bain read
scripture from 2 Corinthians. Hymn
"Let There Be Light" was sung.
Richard Bain chose for his sermon
"Suffering" and gave the pastoral
prayer.
The offering was received by
Ken Ramsey and Ian Andrews and
dedicated. Closing hymn was
"Lord of Light" and Rev. Ross
gave the benediction.

Six tables were in play at the
euchre party held at the Auburn
Community Hall on Tuesday
evening, Jan. 12.
Prizes went to the following:
high lady, Tina Empey; low lady,
Mary Shobbrook; high man,
Gordon Gross; low man, Kay Lapp
(playing as a man) and novelty
prize, Harold McClinchey.
The first meeting of 1993 of the
Auburn Presbyterian W.M.S. was
held at the home of Lillian
Letherland. President Martha Daer
opened the meeting with the poem
"Icicles".
The devotional period was
conducted by Marion Haggitt. The
scripture reading was taken from
Psalm 40 verses 1-11. The
meditation was "Why pray when
you can worry?" followed by
prayer. Martha had the study
entitled "Doormat Christianity".
