The icy conditions on
Wednesday, Jan. 13 played havoc
with the members as only 14
attended the Majestic Women's
Institute meeting in the Brussels
library at 2 p.m.
President Leona Armstrong
opened the meeting by welcoming
everyone back after the Christmas
season and read the poem "After
Christmas". Alice Brothers
presided at the piano for the
Opening Ode followed by the Mary
Stewart Collect.
Mrs. Ida Evans and Mrs. Dorothy
Steffler were the convenors for this
meeting on family and consumer
affairs. Ida opened their part of the
meeting with a poem called "The
New Year", then introduced the
guest speaker, Miss Wendy Martin
manager of the 5R's Thrift Shop in
Brussels. She spoke on "Family".
There is the traditional family, one
parent and extended family. There
are many definitions, different
cultures and with these it broadens
one's mind. Wendy also told of
living with a black family in the
U.S. and how it educated her to
their way of life.
Wendy also spoke on the 5R's
Thrift Shop, how it's like an
extended family by all coming
together. She showed a mat that
had been made from cutting of
material. Dorothy thanked Wendy
and presented her with a gift.
Mrs. Marie McTaggart gave a
report of the Huron East District
Directors meeting. She reported the
members of the Institutes had over
half a million volunteer hours just
in Ontario.
The District Annual meeting will
be held in Walton, May 11 at 9:30
a.m. The theme is "Together We
Achieve".
The Huron County Rally is Oct.
4 hosted by Huron West.
The Area Convention is in
Brussels Oct, 27 and 28.
The Secretary Jean Fraser read
the minutes of the December
meeting. The members that helped
pack the shut-in boxes and took
part in the birthday party at the
nursing home were thanked. Jean
read the treasurer's report and a
motion was made to pay the bills.
February card party convenors
are Marie McCutcheon, Marie
McTaggart, Edna McLellan and
Jean Oldfield. A quilt will be set up
at Doris McCall's on Jan. 18.
It was decided to set up a
"Loonie" committee with Leona
Armstrong and Jean Fraser looking
after ways to raise loonies.
Next meeting there will be a
silent auction with each member
bringing a Canadian product.
The Guardian Angel knitting
project was brought to our
attention. The Guardian Drug store
provides the patterns for knitting
the garments for premature babies.
The roll call was "Name the
characteristic you admire most in
your parents or siblings." This had
many varied and interesting
answers. Coins for friendship were
collected. Fun, music and games
were held, followed by the singing
of 0 Canada and the Institute
Grace. Lunch was then served.
