Man urges
trustees to
oppose JK
A Brussels man urged Huron
County Board of Education trustees
to keep up their opposition to
Junior Kindergarten so "the taxpay-
ers won't get shafted again."
Allan Dettweiler of Brussels
made his feelings about JK known
to trustees at their Jan. 11 meeting
by calling it no more than "glori-
fied babysitting."
He credited the board for their
former stand in opposing the
provincially mandated JK but said
he's recently been disappointed by
the board's seeming acceptance of
the program.
"It's going to be a burden on the
taxpayers," he said. "It appears that
trustees are rolling over and play-
ing dead by accepting a grant for
JK."
The grant he is referring to is
actually a confirmation of fund
allocations from the board's 1992
Capital Expenditure Forecast in the
total amount of $580,000 for JK
implementation at Colborne, Grey
Central, Holmesville, Hensall and
Walton Public Schools.
He said the board should stand
up and take action.
"I urge you to invite Education
Minister Tony Silipo to come to
Huron County and hear the voice of
the people. I believe the meeting
will be well attended."
He supplied trustees with a phone
number to call the minister and
organize a phone-in to object to JK.
"I ask all those who arc opposed
to JK to stick to their convictions
and not be blackmailed by a slimy
government," he said. "If you can't,
I think you should resign immedi-
ately."
Mr. Dettweiler was thanked for
his presentation but no further
remarks came from trustees.
In the past, trustees have
expressed their opposition to JK.
However, they've now created the
Ad Hoc Committee of Junior
Kindergarten to examine the issue.
The latest report from the com-
mittee indicated two trustees had
attended an Ontario Public School
Board's Association meeting on JK
where they learned one board has
sought a legal opinion regarding
the Ministry's ability to mandate
every board implement JK. This
board had received the opinion that
the Ministry does have the power to
cause each board to have a JK pro-
gram.
They also learned that one board
intended to discontinue JK effec-
tive Sept. 1, 1993.
