The Blyth Bantams kept their
league winning streak intact over
the holiday season as they rolled
over Milverton 6-1 at home on
Dec. 21 and then started off the
New Year in fine fashion on Jan. 2
as they went on the road and pasted
a weak Zurich II team 10-1.
Against Milverton, Blyth scored
two power-play goals and a
shorthanded tally for a 3-1 second
period lead. The game remained
close throughout until Blyth
responded with three quick goals in
the game's final five minutes to
keep their undefeated league streak
intact with a 6-1 triumph.
Brian McNichol notched two
goals with single markers recorded
by Chris Stewart, Christopher
Howson, Mike Salverda and Jason
Rutledge. Game assists went to
Chris Stewart, with three, Brian
McNichol, Mike Salverda and Greg
Toll.
In Zurich the scoring was
balanced throughout the lineup as
all but one Blyth skater, including
all four defencemen, scored goals.
The line of Jason Rutledge,
Christopher Howson and Ryan
Chamney led the assault with
Rutledge netting two goals and
Howson and Chamney adding
singles. All three players also
picked up three assists each. Single
goals belonged to Greg Toll, Chris
Stewart, Peter Craig, Mike
Salverda, Henry Bos and Michael
de Jong. Game assists went to
Chris Stewart and Brian Marks,
with two each, while single helpers
were recorded by Michael de Jong
and Peter Craig.
Chris Lee went the distance
between the Blyth pipes with only
a single opposition shot eluding
him.
In between these games the
Bantams travelled to Huron Park
on Dec. 23, where they brought
home the Consolation Champion-
ship banner in the Stephen
Township Minor Hockey Bantam
Tournament. Blyth opened up
against a hard working London
LMHAT Thunder team. Blyth was
simply outworked and outskated as
London shut out Blyth 3-0 in a
tight defensive struggle.
This opening round loss sent
Blyth into the Consolation round
where they met Stephen Township
in game two. The line of Ryan
Chamney, Jason Rutledge and
Christopher Howson led the team
to victory, scoring five of Blyth's
goals in their 6-1 win. Stephen
Township scored the only goal in a
tentative first frame but Blyth took
control with three goals in the first
three minutes of the second period.
Greg Toll sent Ryan Chamney in
for a breakaway goal to start the
goal rush. Eight seconds later Blyth
had a 2-1 lead as Chamney scored
again after the centre ice faceoff
after a pass from Christopher
Howson.
A minute and a half later
Howson assisted on Blyth's third
goal as Brian McNichol
backhanded one through the
stopper's legs. Three more third
period goals went unanswered as
Blyth skated to victory. Christopher
Howson upped the score to 4-1 as
Jason Rutledge passed to Ryan
Chamney, who split the defence
and set up an easy tip in by
Howson.
Jason Rutledge counted Blyth's
fifth goal as Jonathan Collins' shot
was redirected by Ryan Chamney
to Rutledge at the corner of the
goal crease. Howson and Rutledge
also assisted on Blyth's final goal
as Chamney notched the hat trick.
This 6-1 win sent Blyth into the
Consolation Championship later in
the day against Paisley. It was a
struggle throughout but Blyth`s
defence and discipline propelled
them to a 5-1 championship win.
Blyth opened the scoring 19
seconds into the game as Mike
Salverda scored a picture-perfect
goal as he finished off a 2 on 1
break with Chris Stewart. Paisley
scored a shorthanded goal late in
the first but Blyth scored the only
second period goal for a 2-1 lead.
Jason Rutledge passed to Jonathan
Collins who spotted Ryan
Chamney alone in front. Chamncy
quickly backhanded the puck
through the goalies' legs. Chamney
increased the lead to 3-1 five
minutes into the third with an
unassisted effort. Blyth upped the
count to 4-1 two minutes later,
while enjoying a two man power
play. Greg Toll passed to Michael
de Jong, who sent a pass towards
the Paisley net which was deftly
deflected into the crease by Brian
Marks. Peter Craig completed the
game scoring with one second left
in the contest as he drilled Brian
McNichol's pass past the helpless
Paisley puck stopper,
This 5-1 win gave Blyth the
Tournament Consolation Cham-
pionship and completed another
eventful day of hockey for the
Bantam team.
The Blyth Atom Rep hockey
team competed in the Silver Stick
Tournament in Wingham in mid-
Dec.
Blyth opened the tourney with a
5-5 tie to Clifford, then edged
Teeswater 3-2, then dropped a 9-1
decision to Huron Park, which went
on to win the "C" trophy in the
tournament.
On Dec. 19 Blyth travelled to
Listowel to meet the Listowel H
squad. Blyth jumped out to a 4-1
first period lead but Listowel
bounced back to within one in the
third. Blyth then scored twice mid-
way through the third to seal a 7-4
victory. Joel Arthur and Kyle
Anderson each scored twice for
Blyth with singles going to Jamie
Black, Chris Carter and Jeremy
Van Amersfoort. Assists went to
Van Amersfoort, two; while Black,
Carter, Anderson, and Darryl
Postma tallied one each.
The team was then off skates for
two weeks through Christmas
holidays. They travelled to Zurich
on Jan. 6 where the Christmas
turkey definitely showed.
