Brussels Council briefs Village gets PRIDE approval It was a tie and a loss for Brus- sels Houseleague PeeWees as they played in Goderich and Zurich this past weekend. On Friday, Jan. 8 the team went end to end with Goderich for a 2-2 finish. Goderich got the scoring started but Cory Campbell off a play by Clint Fischer tied it up with 4 min- utes remaining in the first. In the second the host team tagged on an unanswered goal, but Brussels returned the favour in the third when David Proulx dropped it in off a play by Campbell. In Zurich on Saturday it was a different story with each team dom- inating an 'period, but Brussels los- ing by two. Zurich was in control early scor- ing three in the first before Corey Bragg, off a play by Kevin Mutter nudged in his first of the game. Zurich answered back almost immediately with three more, then Bragg tagged on another with just 18 seconds left in the first. Mike Cooper got the assist. Zurich scored two unanswered goals in the second period making it an 8-2 game for the hosts, but Brussels put on the heat in the third narrowing the margin by four in the Continued from page 1 Mr. Howard Bernard is Fire Chief at a rate of $600 annually. The Recreation Committee is composed of Councillor Mary Stretton, Gary Pipe, Steve Coulter and Mr. Crawford. They will receive $20 per meeting. The Medical Dental Centre Board representatives are Dave McCutcheon, Murray Siddall, Councillor Bruce Hahn and Ms Pipe. Representatives on the Cemetery Board are Jack Bryans, Wayne Todd, Doug Sholdice, William King and Ms White. Fischer with help from Campbell and Jeff Finch started things off then Bragg got his hat trick goal assisted by Mutter and Jason Kellington. Tanner Banks lit the light on a breakaway just 50 seconds before Fischer notched another, again with help from Campbell and Finch. Zurich got their only goal of the third at 4:33, but with 54 seconds remaining Bragg got his fourth marker of the game. Assists went to Cooper and Campbell. The final score was 9-7 for Zurich. Midgets add another win Brussels Midgets chalked up another win on Jan. 6 when they hosted Elma-Logan in WOAA hockey action outscoring the visi- tors by five. It was a standoff through most of the first period until 3:32 when Brent Whitmore set up Wayne Alexander for the first goal of the game. Halfway through the second the Brussels' attack began in earnest with three goals scored in less than three minutes. Payment for mileage and meetings is the same as for council. Paul Josling has been appointed building inspector. The Industrial Commission Rep- resentative for the year is Keith Mulvey. Council representatives are Councillors Wilson, Hahn and Hastings. Doanne Raymond Pannell have Brussels Clerk Donna White reported to council at the Jan. 4 meeting that the village has received its portion of the building inspector grant in the amount of $2,250.56. *** Ms White also told council that the congregation of St. Ambrose Catholic Church is planning the building of a new church this year. They are either going to build on the present property or on a Turn- berry St. property, which would require a zoning change and a change to the official plan. A letter is coming from Brian Treble, the planner for the village, laying out what changes would be needed to accommodate the build- ing should they decide to move it. If they build at the present location a change will not be necessary. Council was in full support of the building regardless of where it is situated. Ms White said council will be kept informed as more information becomes available. *** Dave Reed from Frank Cowan Insurance attended the meeting along with Keith Mulvey and Doug Sholdice to review the village cov- erage for the year. The Public Utili- ties Commission was present as well to discuss its coverage. Mr. Reed reported to council that Dr. Bosyk's claim had been dropped. Council decided to increase the environmental liability insurance from $2 million to $3 million at an additional cost of $270.. The total cost for 1993 of the vil- lage's portion of insurance is $11,078. *5* Council was asked if they would be interested in looking at a 1988 Chev one ton truck with hoist which was discovered in a truck trader. The truck has only 19,000 original kilometres on it and the asking price is $12,900 certified. Some members of council agreed to take a look and report back at the next meeting. *5* Council and PUC Commissioners reviewed the list of applicants who applied for the position when Ms White is on maternity leave. They been appointed as auditors for the village. The Brussels Catering Group is. named as a committee of council. Carol Thornton and Marie Bernard are appointed as the school crossing guards at an hourly rate of $6.35. Mark Howard is their back- up if they are unable to work. Councillors Wilson and Hastings will serve as representatives on the Joint Building Committee. Reeve Workman is the represen- tative on the North Huron Econom- ic Development Committee as of March 1. chose two local residents and each one will be asked to come in and work for a day. The final decision will be left to the clerk and Ms Pipe. *5* Jim Harris is the new assessor for Brussels. *5* Brussels People The Majestic Women's Institute of Brussels started off 1993 by having their monthly euchre card party on Jan. 5 in the library. There were six tables in play with the following being the winners: high 'lady, Helen Gallop; high man, Jim Bowman; lucky table, Dona Knight, June Jacklin, Marguerite Sanderson, John Heddon and lucky tallies, Helen Bray, Clara Haig, Mabel Bauer, Alice Nicholson, Ross Cunning- ham, Verna Tunney, Jim Smith, Mary Huether, Mel Jacklin and Iona McLean. The next card party is on Tuesday, Feb. 2. Sheila Richards has returned to Brussels after spending the holiday season with Robert and Helen Richards in Regina, Sask. The bright sunshine and blue skies made up for the temperatures which ran from minus 20 to 40 degrees celsius on a daily basis. A certificate of approval was received from the Ministry of the Environment for the storm sewers on John St., under PRIDE. *** Ms White is to draw up an agree- ment for water and sewer service for Huronlea and have a lawyer review it. She is to get two quotes from lawyers for reviewing the agreement and go with the lowest.
