Hospital board election' iscontroversial...

She also admitted she had not spoken to
• Hill ' or Pike to find out whether they. had
•planned to seek re-election to the boaaid.
Asked about other , claims - that she had
telephoned board members prior to the
annual meeting to discuss how they should
vote, and ' that she had solicited . votes by
purchasing member sbips in the hospital
association for otherpersons; Vair refused to
comment directly, saying only that, "I have
done nothing improper; I have done nothing
questionable and I do not apologize ' for
anything I have done:" •
Following the ' annual meeting, several
people suggested that a.change is needed in.
the way 'members are elected to the hospital
board, making it part of •a general municipal,
election, i'n 'tire: same manner that school

she also was acclaimed.
• Although the.meeting was unusually -well
attended, with an estimated 60 persons at
the RNA Training Centre, it proceeded
quietly and with little obvious controversy.
Following the auditor's report Jack Kopas,
a former board chairman; asked whether
there is •any reason for concern about

depletion of the hospital's capital..fin ds as a
result Of the building' project. The auditor, a
Mr. Simpson fronts Thorne, Riddell, London,
indicated it•should notbea problem so long
as the hospitallcontinue to. receive a regular
allow of cash, from the Health Ministry.
Earlier Ross Prodtor.had 'raised ,a question
about the cost of. the building programand
how much of the money thee hdspital would
have to. borrow. Pike told- himthe total cost
will be about $1.75 ,million, of which some
=$400,000 will cone in contributions fkom the'
ministry,. the County of ; Huron and" the
Hospital Foundation. . ' ' .
•
The, balance will have to come from the
hospital's "present and future resources"
from .the . fund raising drive, •which has a
target ,of $400,000, he said. How much' the
hospital has to borrow.depends on'•• the
sgccess• : of . the find raising;,.;,, if the . ;,drive ,
reached its goal, the 'hospital would haveto
borrow about $225,000.:

Later y. in ;the.. meeting. Proctor spoke out
again, expressing: disappointment at the
board's decision earlierin the year not to go'
.along with a recon' mendation from an ad hoc
committee to open. board meetings , to the
public.
r
Public . access to meetings of ' publicly
funded bodies is necessary to ensure ac-
countability, he said, and italso is .good
public relations. He proposed a motion .
recommending the board again consider
opening its meetings to observers from the
general ' public, and this was passed
overwhelmingly in a show .off hands.:
