icohol infrr,naik n centre
adds to counselling services
'The Alcohol Educational and Counsel-
ling Program, operated in G.oderich under
the sponorship of the Addiction Research
Foundation of Ontario, has added a new
dimension to the services offered to area
residents.
An open- house, held Wednesday,
November 28, marked the opening of the
Alcohol Information Centre. The informa-
tion centre is located in the same office and
run by the same staff that pperate the
counselling' program. 1
The centre is open daily, from 9 a.m. to 5
pan.,to anyone interested in obtaining
alcohol-related information.
The counselling program; which got
underway as of September 1, will continue..
as before, and. Paula Pranovi, a counsellor,
stresses the two operations are separate, '
so access to the information centre is not
restricted to participants of the counselling '.
program.
Unique Project
The counselling service is unique, says
Project, Director Norman Giesbrecht, be-
cause it is prevention oriented and aimed
at early, stage problem drinkers.
The project is set up mainly for people.
who have had "no contact with p.olice. or
health authorities," says Giesbrecht. How-
ever, 'theymay be experiencing problems
with their spouses, at work, or driving after
drinking, he added.
An impdr'tant distinction between' this
program and most other programs aimed
at combating alcohol abuse, is that partic-
ipants neednot necessarily admit to being
alcoholics.
"It's most appropriate for people who.
would not accept the label `alcoholic',"
said Giesbrecht. ``And they shouldn't,.
because they probably aren't," he added!
One -To -One
The program provides 'individual coun-
selling, ona one-to-one basis, ' said
Pranovi. It involves one hour-long session
per week, for seven weeks. '
Discussion is the main element in the
program, says Pranovi. The counsellor and
the participant discus previous drinking
experiences, drinking patterns, and plans
for dealingwith the urge to drink . in
upcoming weeks. All information is confid-
ential.
In addition, participants are assigned
reading material and view a series of video-
tapes developed specifically for 'the pro-
gram.
The service is provided free to the
participant and is funded by the addiction
research foundation. •
Giesbrecht says support for the fledgling
program from community leaders and
professionals has been good. Reaction
from participants has been positive, °adds
Pranovi.
However, the program has not done a
high volume of Slut* so far.
"Doing'someth rg about problem drink
ing, in the early Stdges is a relatively new
idea," says Giesorecht.
"It takes; time for people to get used to.

TO THE EDITOR
To the Editor,
In your recent issue (paper) I would like
to point out the fact that 'I am in no way
objecting to any project as it applies to the
arena.
My only comment would be if a decision
was made, it should be based on long term,
regardless of what .went on in the past.
My objective and comment at the public
meeting rightly or wrongly, was to point
out the fact that 'the township 'council had
turned down an application to clear some
scrub brush to square off the fief' • and
increase my productivity. It was rejected
by the. council, - and now they want me to
vote. Mgicv.

had to run the gauntlet through the crowd
of well wishers amid a. liberal shower of
rice. When they at last drove away, there
was many a tear shed by the women folk,
much . to the amusement of Cliippy
Chisholm.
"I dinna ken why women make such a
blitherin' to do at weddings," he said for
everybody to hear. "Ye'd think the young
folk were going tae share a grave instead of
a honeymoon, bed!"
REDTREES
His witting but rude `remarks infuriated
his wife Lizzie, and she dug her elbow into
his ribs with a force that took his breath
away.
"Can ye no keep that wicked mouth of
yours shut frae just a minute?" she asked
in a disgusted ' tone. "Och, man. I'm
ashamed of ye!"
But Chippy's words brought nothing but
humour to an already very joyous occasion.
Everbody laughed - even the minister!
