edam Snobelen chairman of Bruce board
Michael Snobelen, acclaimed as the
new chairman of the Bruce County
board of education, feels the board should
place a higher priority on telling taxpayers
of the county how it spends $40 million a
year. •
"I think improving our public image is
our most important priority with the second
being to improve our labour relations
between teachers and the board," said the
former board vice-chairman.
"The board is doing a better job than the
public perceives it to ibe," he said, but
declined to elaborate, saying .these are
delicate matters. '
First elected to the board four years ago,
he replaces, outgoing chairman Bill Setter-
• ington, who declined to run for chairman
again. •
Snobelen, 37, said people without
children see the board as spending too
much money while those with children see
• the board as spending ' too little. He has
three children in, elementary school.
Snobelen said immediate challenges are
the development of a pre -kindergarten
I
program, French immersion and career -
related programs.
A Ripley area farmer, he also owns two
grain elevators in Ripley and Lucknow. His
past experience includes being a municipal
councillor and reeve of Huron Township.
While the race for chairman was no
contest, it was the opposite for the post of
vice -Chairman.
Leslie Abell, 64, of Walkerton was
chosen on the fourth ballot, defeating c;iief
opponent Alma Conn -Armstrong in a draw
