We need investment, and to have that investment we have to have confidence, and that takes. long range planning fora the future. Women's Issues Certainly look ' at equal pay for work ''of equal value -- yes. I still believe in the merit system, whether it be_forman or woman; I still see .a system that will allow merit to be rewarded in some way. If you have the ambition, that will be recognized and you can advance. That cpmes right back to' the person again,, not the man or the woman. I still feel that it's the choice of the woman or the man, if he or she wants to be in the workplace, that is still their choice, If they want a position, they will compete 'the same as a man or the man will compete the same as a womanfor that position. Local Issues The high cost of money has been an on -g6 - Mg problem, that goes beyond the borders of Huron -Bruce, but it is a concern here. Farm financing, small' business financing, jobs, ate certainly a concern. Many of'those things go hand in hand; because. of the high cost of money we don't see construction, we don't see as many developments taking place. We LUCKNOW CHRISTIAN, REFORMED CHURCH Invites You To Worship With Theni On SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 2 10:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nursery downstairs morning and evening EVERYONE WELCOME need those things to create ,jobs: High interest rates have really been the basis of most of the problems. Those high interest rates cause many of our farmers and busi- nesses to go into voluntary receivership or forced receivership. By voluntary I mean those that just closed theirbusiness or their farm in the best way they could without saying -anything, I've worked With an awful lot of our farmers and businessmen in trying to find ways of ,getting them through this crisis, Agriculture as well as small businesses are looking for interest rates that will allow them to become viable or get through the crisis that we've had in the last few years Agriculture just cannotsupport with any amount of debt at all the present cost of money, and it's very difficult to encourage anyone to expand a business with the cost of money in itspresent form, and not knowing what the future is going 'to hold: I believe that if interest rates were reduced signif icantly, we would see expansion, again in most areas. • Soil Conservation Especially in this riding with the shoreline of Lake Huron, and sitting in Southwestern Ontario in the watershed that we're in, we need to have programs, or initiatives taken to -preserve our soils and our water. We are farming, in southwestern Ontario very often on a layer of topsoil eight inches thick, sometimes less than that, and we have to preserve that. When we talk of soil preservation, the economy has forced agri Combined United -Presbyterian Summer Worship Services September 2 ' 10 A.M. Lucknow Presbyterian Church Rev. Allison Ramsay 56 culture tQ try to get as many bushels per, acre out of that crop that we're growing because of the high cost of inputs. Sometimes our preservation methods have not been the best in those cases. We are fortunate in this area to have some very devoted individuals in agriculture and urban areas who recognize the value of preserving our shorelines, our watersheds and our .soils, and have taken action to initiate some programs on their own part and encourage others do as well, . I commend them and encourage them to keep doing that. - We have to encourage our farmers, to properly care and tend to their soils; many of them do. It has to be their decision and they usually, know best how to _rotate. and tend their land. The that flows over to tourism, because we're blessed with a shoreline the full length of the riding, which is very 'beneficialto tourism. That is a very good industry as well, taken the employment and job creation in that area, very often bringing foreign dollars to our businesses not only along the shore- line but it certainly generates much .further inland. .What Can I bring To This Riding as MP I brought experience to Parliament when I was first elected as a farmer and with a very committed interest in trade because I was farming before I was elected. I was also chairman of Ontario's White Bean Produc- er's Marketing Board, involved in market- ing, and ontwo trade delegations before I NEW PORK [IN A LOIN BLANKET SAUSAGES W!ENERSNIIZEL CHICKEIIIBREASTS. • NEW PORK IN A BLANKET [SLAVINKEN] Box of16 ` $9 60 CHICKEN LEGS CUSTOM KILLING. Since serving in the Houseg of Commons. I' was immediately appointed to the Finance, Trade and Economics committee. Also, I sat perman- ently on the Agriculture committee; and when I was first elected I was appointed to a task force by the . federal government to, t study .trade problems within Canada and • how we could better compete in the world with Canadian products. I've'travelled to other parts of the world: as a representative of Canada, in a diplomatic position or public 'relations area. I also participated in a trade delegation to 'south- east Asia with 41 of Canada's businessmen, and that. was a very successful trade mission-- we.generated at least $200 million worth of sales when we were there. Not very long ago the U.S. government asked me to come to the States and meet my counterparts there. I spent bye weeks in the U.S. talking about agriculture, trade, and Canada -U.S. relations. Those are things I have been doing; I think that brings some experience to the House of Commons. • Earlier this year I was appointed as Deputy Critic for Finance in the House of Commons which deals with all money bills coming before the House of Commons. After that I was appointed the Deputy Critic for Agriculture with particular responsibility for eastern Canada , and presently . hold that position.
