NDP cnadidatehopes to raise political awareness
In running as. the New Democrat Party's
candidate in the upcoming federal election,
Valerie Bolton said she hopes to raise the
politcai awar.eness of the people of Huron -
Bruce..•
Bolton, 32, resides on an East Wawanosh
Township farm with her husband, Dean
Walker and her two young daughters,
Moz,fica and Amber. She was chosen at a.
nomination meeting heldeitf'ne 14 at Clinton.
She has been active at all. levels of the"
NDP organization since 1979., and ran Tony
McQuail's campaign in the provincial elec-
tion of 1981. •
But now the tables ` have • turned and
McQtiail is her campaign manager. At an
informal press conference held last Friday at
the Walker -Bolton farm, he outlined her
experience as a party worker and a well,
known spokesman for women's issues in the
Women Today group.
Bolton started, her address by saying the
NDP's 'strong and optimistic standmakes
her committed to the party, and to• the
country. The NDP has long been the voice of
the ordinary' Canadian, not big, business.
She described five areas of concern to her
and to.the party: jobs, equal opporttinity for
women, high quality publicservices, a fair
tax system and nuclear disarmament. .
The first .priority of . any 'government
should be jobs, Bolton said. Work is what
gives peoples' . lives purpose, she stressed,
and no young person should bedenied the
right to a job.
The impact of high technology will be felt
,keenly in4:the work place over the - next few
'years. The NDP would minimize job' loss due
to high tech through the institution of a
shorter work week and earlier retirement.
Always a spokesman for women's rights
and issues, Bolton said she is proud of the
NDP's record, of commitment to women.

Elect president
of young Conservatives
CLINTON Kevin Campbell of RR 1.
-Dublin was elected president 'of the Huron -
.Bruce Young Progressive Conservatives
YPC) at their July 12 annual Meeting.
Jan Divok.: of : Clinton: was . named vice
president, Carolyn' Wood of Clinton is social
director, Kim Campbell was named
membership director, Michael Coleman is
policy director and Lynne Haines is the
secretary.
The annual meeting was held in. Clinton
and theme them of/the meeting was to foster
and encourage PC youth involvement both
in the riding and in the federal PC Youth
Association, •
Guest speaker, Huron -Bruce. MP Murray
Cardiff, briefed the YPCs on/the important
role, young people play in a,riding. He noted
that youth are an important part of society
and their ideas and . concerns should be '
made known to the, peoplewho affect policy.
Bernie Haines,' who attended campaign
school in London, outlined • campaign
strategies for the 'upcoming eledtion. Sue
J,yndon, Andrew, Johnson and Beth Snell,
members of the Oxford. County YPC
executive were present to exchange ideas
between neighboring YPC ridings. They
also extended an invitation .to Huron -Bruce
to join them in their camp -out at'Long Point
on August 11. .
The NDP believes in equal pay for work of
equal. value, she said. The party also would
ensure affordable and accessible child care,
as well as deal with the problem of •unem-
ployment . and poverty among women,
particularly in, single -parent families.
Bolton said she is personally committed to'
bettering the lot of , rural women and.
battered women.
The party also is _.committed to quality
public services and . a universal pension
system. The NDP has been .the voice . for
these service's in the past, she said, and will
continue to be in the future.
. Canadians have the right to those types of
services they have grown accustomed to and
a guarantee to the continuation of those
services.
The fourth area of concern is. providing•
Canadians with a fair tax system which
would . eliminate the giant tax ' `loopholes"
for big corporations.
The NDP wouldkndeavour to stabilize low
interest rates; provide low cost loansfor
small businessmen and farmers as well as
eliminate the federal sales tax on farm fuels.
Last but not least, Bolton and the NDP
have come out strongly 'in favour of nuclear
disarmament: She proposed that Canada.
become a world leader in the quest for peace
by setting an example as a nuclear free zone:
and put an end to cruise missile testing in
'Canadian air space.
Following Bolton's speech, a brief ques-
tion and answer period was held
When asked 'what she thought the major
issue concerning the people of Huron -Bruce
in this election is, she replied jobs and a fair
return to farmers for their products since
farming .and jobs are closely tied together in
this riding. •
She was asked what - she thought . her
chances are of winning the riding in the
Valerie Bolton
upcoming election and she replied "great".
But she ,added her first -goal is to . make an
impression on the voters of Huron -Bruce by
getting' people to talk about issues and
solutions rather than personalities..
Bolton was raised in Vancouver and . edu-
rated at Simon Fraser 'University in British
Columbia.: • She worked and 'travelled in'
Australia for two years b,efore . returning to
Simon Fraser where she met 'her husband.,
They 'came to Ontario in 1974. •A -
