NOG 2R0 NOTICE: " CLERK'S OFFICE WILL BE -COED MAY 17,1984 Firemen mist purchase gear to meet standards... .from page 1 `refighter in the province to•- be equipped vith a helmet meeting spe ed . minimum tandards" The Lucknow Fire -Department as already purchased new helmets for their remen, who. must wear the helmets while ghting a fire to qualify for co p,ensation overage. Failure to wear the standard elmet' could also result in a 51,000 fine. Among other things, the neat regulation ays a fire helmet must carry "retro- ective" material that cane seen in suioke, ave flame resistant eatc vet's, 00 holes or vets in the crown and carry no metal frame round the visor, if one is worn. According to provincial fire officials this is st the beginning of .a program which ventually may bring" sweeping changes in the type of gear the helmet and rubber boot bridgades use to protect themselves at fires. The Ontario Research Foundation and the National Research Council, together with experts from the armed forces, , are now experimenting with personal clothing de- signed specifically for fire fighters. They are exaanining the effect of protective gear on mobility and metabolic (body)' heat. ' Upgrading gear its long overdue say most peoptein the firefighting field and pressure to have fire fighters covered,, under the provincial legislation came fronrthe firemen thetn'selves. But municipalities forced to pay for new gear from severely strained budgets are concerned. . The Lucknow Fire Department has an excellent working relatiship with the four I municipalities it serves, says Chief I'amil- ton. ' The Lucknow District Fire Board, comprised of representatives from the councils of each of the municipalities, has not restricted the fire department budget and the purchase of the new helmets has been added to the budget. Hamilton 'says the department has never had any problem with the municipalities. If something is mandatory, the fire chief informs *the board and the board approves the necessary funding. The total budget for fire protection provided by the Lucknow department in 1983 was 532,336.10. Expendituresincluiied the maintenance and replacement of equipment as well as the purchase of new equipment. • PAYING AS HIGH AS 131/8' ON 5 YEAR ANNUAL Guaranteed Investment Certificate ALSO PAYING AS HIGH AS 121/2% ON 3 YEAR ANNUAL Through such Trust Companys as VICTORIA & GREY -CITY TRUST STANDARD - STERLING INTERNATIONAL MUNICIPAL - CREDIT FONCIER All companies members of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corp- oration.
