encouraging says. Barb. They never say,
"She won't." But they say, "Maybe, if we
work hard."
Barb' and Rick's - determination and
persistence have achieved significant results
this far and Crystal's potential is open
ended. Thexbave applied forher to attend
another 'two month DAP program this
summer and the outlook is promising that
shewill be accepted to the program again.
The emotional and mental responsibility as
well as the financialburden of a handi-
cappedchild is enormous and Barb and Rick
have met the challenge of keeping Crystal at
home with them, i>i,a way many would not be
, capable of.
It's difficult, says Barb. Their seven year
old daughter; Angela is especially bright,
gifted and talented in her own right. After
1
struggling so hard with. Crystal, and being so
proud of her achieving the simplest skill, it is
difficultto remember. that Angela is accom-
plishing things only an especially gifted
child can achieve at her age:
"It's one extreme to the other," . says Barb
who worries they must give Angela the
specialattention she deserves as well.
But Angela has,, adjusted well to the
special circumstances of her sister's fife and
she works with Crystal to teach her new
things and shares In her accomplishments
with great enthusiasm.
"Crystal's response is so rewarding to
everyone who works with her," says her
nursery school teacher. "She's just a gift"
"She is such a cuddly loveable child with an
air,o€ mischievousness and it warms your
h to know. her."
