From that total 'cost of'.$12,400, Mr. McCall subtracted Ministry of
locution•grants liasecligin 25 pupils -in ;each • of the two initial grades of

,: Exeter Trustee Clarenee.McDonald asked why the cost of teachers was
not included 1 the~ estimate?
/ The• : upeititem ent replied that teaching costs were not . included
because the• ncb ;Immersion students would need a teacher even if
they wereurhjt" reftlar class room.
Director of Education Bob Allan added.that theoretically there are no.
teacher costs, : butin, reality ' there probably would be.
The board also acknowledged that they had received letters. from two
citizens with concerns for setting up a French Immersion program. Mr.
Allan read aloud the letters from D. C. Scott and Doug Harrison,. both of
Goderich. ,
Mr. Scott's : letter took excerpts from. a recent Canadian Education
Association (CEA) study on the :' .sues and Effects" of French
Immersion. The over riding theme of the excerpts were negative towards
French Immersion:
But Mr.. Sully had the same CEA study and read the summary which
said in general, ,administrators involved in, setting up the program felt ''
the amount or time spent on . French Immersion . was offset by the
benefits.
"The program is worth the difficulties," said Mr. Sully._
"I would like to finish by saying that I have the utmost respect for
anyone who is able to speak more than one :language. However, I am not
firmly convinced that other learning opportunities are not equally as
pertinent in the overall education of our youth," stated Mr. Harrison's

Sonic boom awakens village residents last Thursday morning
Believe it or not - folks in Ripley and sur-
rounding area were awakened early
Thursday morning (March 8) around 5 a.m.
by a big bang.
Happening before daylight it was quite an
eiperience and was a topic of conversation
for the next couple of days. People hearing it
wanted to know from others if they also did
or did not hear it and what caused it.
A lady from the Lucknow area, asked the
Wingham (C.K.N.X.) radio staff about it,
but they had no knowledge of it. On
Thursday morning school bus driver
Harvey Brooks who lives on William Street
in Ripley heard it and rushed outside to see
if his tractor, parked by the house, had ex-
ploded. It had not but instead he heard the
sound of a plane passing overhead.
So it must have been a sonic boom —
made when the plane breaks the sound bar-
rier.
Scary flight
Speaking about planes, two Kincardine
ladies Jean Wylds formerly of Ripley and
her friend Betty Fry went through a bomb
scare at the end of their return flight from
Florida. Starting from St. Petersburg the
plane was to land at London around four -
thirty in the'morning.
Instead they were told that on account of
fog they were going to Toronto. Shortly
before landing they were told that there was
a bomb threat on the plane and that they
were to leave everything behind and get off
the plane by Chute.
on March 9 in Kincardine and District
Hospital.
Friends of Roy Davis Sr., former Ripley
barber, will be glad to know that he is im-
proving after a serious illness in Victoria
Hospital, London. He has retired from
barbering, and he and his wife Madeline are
living in Mount Brydges.
RIPLEY
by Ab Wylds _
The plane landed in a remote section of
the airfield and they were hustled away,
from it. Later they picked up their luggage,
went through customs, and were taken by
bus to London airport.
Here Jean's' sister Marj. and husband
Hartley. McTavish of London picked them
up and took them home to Kincardine. Jean
and Betty had a three week vacation with
another former Ripleyite Elsie ( Pollock )
MacDonald at her home in St. Petersburg.
Returned home ,.•
Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Macintosh of St.
Thomas and Margaret Scott of Ripley
returned on Friday from a two week vaca-
tion in Florida.
They visited with Margaret and D.A.'s.
sisters Jessie Hartley and Kathleen Nestor
at Clearwater, Florida: They had a lovely
time with nice sunshine.
Mrs. Verna Finlayson and Mr. and Mrs.
Bob Johnston and daughters Julie and Jen-
nifer are among those holidaying in Florida.
Congratulations are extended to Mr. and
Mrs. Lee Fuller on the arrival of a daughter
Mrs. Pearl ( Allister) MacKay of the Sixth
Concession east in. Huron Township is
visiting in Calgary at present.`

Municipal Telephone System, office on the
main street in.. Ripley working with Mrs.
Irene Liddle and/Mrs. Mary Hackett is Mrs..
Lynn Van Roby of /the Tenth Concession
west in Huron (the former Lennie Harrison
place) . She replaces Mrs. Kerry Houston of
Ripley.
• Niels Frederiksen of Ripley is back at
Fort Walton Beach in the Pensacola area of
north western' Florida after spending a
month in Alabama. He reports nice sunshine
last Sunday in eontrast to the snow storm
here.
Ripley folks going into Kincardine and
District hospital for treatment in the past
week or so were Mrs. June Dodds, Mrs.
Merle ( Jim) Tout, and Jim Brooks. June is
back home to Ripley after a short stay. Also
home from Kincardine in the past month are
Mrs. Ada Farrell and Jack Carter.
With Bobby Robertson on vacation in Bar-
bados the report of the March meeting of the
Ripley Happy Hearts was written by Rets
Irwin.
Ab Wylds had a letter from Bill Bushel
last Wednesday. Bill will be remembered a
the baker at the Grace and Elliott Car
ruthers bake shop at the south end of th(
main business section. Bill is now in Regina
Since leaving Ripley he has followed th(
local hews in the weekly paper.
Bitterly cold
For the record last" Sunday, March 11,198
was one miserable bitter cold day as one of
the worst storms of the winter with strong
north winds covered the country. •
White outs made hazardous driving condi
tions. The bitter coldness even seeped int(
the homes:
Cancellation of meetings and notice of
blocked highways were part of the radio
news. The O.P.P. were warning people to
stay off the roads. It is always better to b¢
safe rather than sorry.
The fourth meeting of the Ripley Fitness
Fanatics was held March . 8, 1984. Al
members were present and answered tht
roll call and discussed women in sports, sup'
pleness, food; fuel for sports and fitness;
calorie makers and, athletic.beverages.
They also sampled macaroni, cheese an
tomato and oatcakes. Then they attended a
Dance Fit "class at the Ripley District
School. The next meeting will be March 21;
1984.
