People who have weak stomachs shouldn't ride on roller coasters. And pebple who haven't enough gumption to climb off the pre-Christmas bandwagon and make it a good and happy time, deserve to wake up on Christ- mas morning worn out, huhg over and broke. Despite 'the seasonal scramble and the high-pressure salesman- ship, it CAN be a happy climax in our year,' with a little effort, a little thought, and a good measure of tolerance. Just adopt the fol- loWing simple formula, and you'll have the happiest, most reward- ing Christmas season yoU'Ve ever enjoyed; • * Don't win a 25-pound turkey at a pre-Christmas raffle, totter up the 'stairs under its weight at 3 a.m. and throw 'it triumphantly on the bed just as your ball-and-chain is getting up on her elbow to blast you. I did one year, the bed col- lapsed, and the Old Battleaxe wound up on the floor in .the em- brace of a cold and very dead turkey. This is conducive r ,to neither' peace on earth nor good will to- ward men. * Do be as 'helpful incon- spicuous ,as possible around - the house during those hectic days -be- fore Christmas, Those screams at the -children, snarls at you, and outer other manic depressive. symptoms means that (a) she loSt her Christ mas .card list from last year. or (b) Aunt smile and Uncle George have .jusi -written to say .that. they'll be along. for' CliristiriA' with the five kids, 'or (e) 'she. has found the present you bought for her and hid so carefully, and she is not enamoured of that lovely 'pair of kneeling pads. Don't leave a your Christmas N, shopping until the last day, then get a few hookers under your belt and sally forth to wrap it all up in one merry excursion, Fellow I know did that last year. It took him until April to get rid of the pony that arrived on Christmas morning for his four-year-old son. And he never could get back the clown payment from the airline company on one of those "Fly Now-Pay Later". trips to South America, with which he presented his wife. * Do take the family out in the woods to get a Christinas tree. As your wife points out, it's an. old tradition,' and sort of, well, fun. You wind up with wet feet, head. eoldg, torn clothing,•• the ear all, scratched, and a tree that looks n,s though it hiid been the locale of the Annual Spruce-buds Conven- tion. But you can always buy one down at the corner the next day. * Don't allow women and children in the house when you're putting up the tree. There is a time that tests men's souls, and by the Holy Old Jumping Jeremiah, that is one Of them. It is not the language I worry about at 'this time. It is the fact that there is an axe too handy. * * To top 'off this. recipe for a hap- py Christmas, I suggest you mem- orize these lines, the only known fragment front the works of Hugh natant the great Welsh bard of 4111111111111=101 11.111MillIMINIM .06 alevelateenth ,oentory;. !other itutp help the waosatil .„OW, Or totter under the palotte, WOO, Get up ,early mat off Y94 So, On 014Stillati. Guard Against Festive Season Fire Hazards- Christmas trees,, a Symbol of gaiety and happiness, too often become a mass of flames and a symbol of disaster, Trees, decorations, and special Christmas costumes should all be chosen with care and protected from fire, The All ;Canada insur- ance Federation, which represents more than 250 Canadian fire, auto- mobile and casualty insurance com- panies, makes these recommend- ations for safety in the, home dur- ing the Christmas season: 1) Choose a small Christmas tree; it will be less hazardous than a larger one. 2) Keep the base of the tree in a container of water; the water will be absorbed and keep the tree moist. 3) Keep trees away from stoves, heaters and fireplaces. 4) Use pod quality electric lights on the tree, not candles. 5) Check your lights for any defects which might cause short circuits. 6) Be sure that Christmas lights do not overload the electrical, cir- cuits in your home. 7) Keep papers, gifts and other inflammable articles away from the base of the tree until Christ- mas eve. 8) Do not use paper, gauze-like materials or other highly inflam- mable cloths for children's cost- umes. 9) Cheek carefully for burning cigarette butts after every party or gathering in your home. 10) Always turn out electric tree lights when room is unoccupied.
