Of Many Things By Ambrose Hills UKRAINIAN WEDDING- 4 „. ,, , ii.. My young nephew married a lovely 'Ukrainian girl last week, and X attended the wedding and learned a lot, Of course, I had known many Ultranians before, I taught school once in a district that was almost entirely Ukrainian, . and I liked them very much. They seem so I alive; they work hard, play hard, love hard and hate hard, I always think of them as the European Irish. I used to read translations of their poetry, sitting in my small room above the school house, when I was lonesome for home.'It was truly an experience. One could see the wheatfields and sense the suff- ering of a people in bondage pass- ionately yearning for freedom - and reading it, I'd forget -being lonesome, and go visiting. —Mr. and Mrs, John Page of Cavalier, North Dakota, spent sev- eral days last week with Mr, and Mrs. Allan McGill and other rela- tives in the Wingliam area, - Mr. and Mrs. Bob Carbort and family, Ottawa, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carbert for a few clays last week and with Other Wingham friends. Bob was here to speak at the Federation of Ag- ricultu're meeting in Londeshore. .—Mr. and. Mrs.- "Scotty" Jackson of West Hill were guests at the weelc-end with Mr. and Mrs, Chas. Hodgins and attended the Stainton- Blair wedding on Friday evening,. Altan Adams met Mr, Glen Berry and Mr. Reed Montroy at Malton airport on Tuesday morn- ing. They accompanied him to Hamilton where they are spending a couple of days on business, —Mr. and Mrs, Max McCarter were in Toronto early this week, where Mr, IVfeCarter was attending a business meeting. -Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Forbes are spending a few days in London with their son-in-law and daughter. —Miss Belle Martin of London and Miss Miriani Martin of De- troit visited one day last week with their sister, Mrs. Robert Wenger Sr., and with other Wingham ,friends. Fuller at the weekend were 'Mr,z8, Fuller's , father, Mr, Charles Stainton of Clifford and her bro- ther-in-law and sister,. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Trines of Blackwater. They all attended the Stainton- Blair wedding in Teeswater on Friday evening. —Marion Willie, little, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Michael Willie, was able to return to school on Monday' after being confined to her home for a few weeks, follow- ing an accident, --We are sorry to report that Mrs. Bertha Lott has been a pa- tient in Wingham Hospital for ov- er a week and it is expected that she will remain in hosPitai for an- other couPle of weeks. On those visits I would consume great quantities of helobche ' and pyrogies, so I guess that's why the food at the wedding last week tast- ed so wonderful to me. And why the singing of Ultrania,n songs sounded so good to my 'ears, 'Ukrainian weddings are wonder- , ful. The bride and groom were given just about everything thati`a young couple could, possibly need for their home; and on top of that; the guests shelled out in hard cash sum that 'seemed mighty big to us anglo-saxons who are relatively niggardly in that regard, "Serving you since 1935" I confess tht I had been some- What cynical about all the fuss and planning and endless arrange- ments that seemed to be 'required for a wedding; bUt when it was over, I was impressed. The boy and girl who marry in Ukranian style have a good start. They know, for sure, that the knot has been tied and pulled tight They know that relatives and friends wish them well - for that is proved in the generosity of the giving and in the gaiety of the celebration, and in the tears that are shed so copiously. When I first knew Ukrainians, they were mostly. very short on cash. Today, they are prosperous, but they know how to .spend their money for the big important things. If they have a fault, it is in their pride - but that 'was a I quality developed by necessity' in !. a race plagued by oppressors, g. vii070mmoim,gmim7Anz**mmmzov7mmigrovnmnnlv,lit,linn 0*Wo *PiatficoOWeoigw4T04.110T4o44mm=tTmi:givt40,4=a=mituoil==*04uue4044-1goiAgOcom I. —Miss Margaret King, of Lon- don,• was a week-end visitor with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Owen King, —Mrs. Chris Summers of Mont- real, and Ilea mother, Mrs, Gert- rude Cameron, left on Monday to spend a couple of days in Detroit.
