MORE CLOSED SHOPS?
Another Canadian textile mill, in
New Brunswick, has closed up, and
hundreds of highly-paid jbbs
appeared. There will be no More
bargaining, there for still higher
pay and fancier fringe benefits!
Recently, two important garment
makers, who•had paid good wages
to scores of Canadian workers,
found it impossible to cornpete with
the Japanese. So, on the basis of
the old saw, "If you can't beat 'em,
join 'em," they have stopped Mak-
ing their garments in Canada.Here-
after, they will be made in Japan,
and the Canadian finm will mere-
ly act as distributor, This main-
tains the jobs of a few statesmen,
but ends the jobs of the needle
workers, More unemployment! —
more taxes to pay unemployment
insurance.
Perhaps you think the closing of
these mills means nothing, to you,
as long as you can continue to buy
Japanese textiles or other foreign
made items cheaply?
How, wrong you can be Your
standard of living as a Canadian
depends more on the health of (Mr
manufacturing industries than any.-
thing else you can runnel Manu-
facturing makes tare jobs, and
PO'S more tastes than any other
industry,
If we all buy foreign-made pro-
duets, Canadian lobe will disappear;

ard of living will sink', This is pure
common sense. Surely we engin to
