Safety Conference
At O.A.C., Guelph
WHITE SCOURS IS
A MAJOR PROBLEM
How can farm people live safely?
This will be the theme for a two-
day Farm Safety Conference to be,
held on February 10 and 11 at the
Ontario Agricultural College under
the joint sponsorship of the On-
tario Department of -Agriculture
and the Ontario Department of
Transport.
The conference will bring to-
gether a selected group of some
300 public-spirited Ontario farm,
people representing every county
and district in Ontario. The con-
ference'Will be an essentialepreIude
to a thorough, province-wide Farm
Accident Survey to be conducted
by the Ontario Department of Agri-
Culture for the full year from
March 1, 1959 to February 29, 1960.
The survey will determine the ac-
cident picture in Ontario and• help
give direction to farm organiza-
tions and the Ontario government
in a safety education program de-
signed •to reduce the number of all
accidents on dntario farms.,
The first day of the donference
will deal with the current farm
safety education program of the
Ontario Department of Agriculture,
and the objectives of the Farm Ac-
,cident Survey. A Farm Safety Ses-
' sion will then discuss various as-
pects of• farm, safety including fire'
safety on the farm arid safety in,
the farm /mine,
The Second day Will deal with,
various aspects of traffic safety.
and how it tante achieved through
enforcement, through high w a y,
traffic And automotive engineering,
through edtteation and community '
organization, and through driver
licensing and the point system.
The conference Will draw to a
close with a discussion by several
rural leaders on the subject: "What

Veterinarians in Ontario report
that infectious white scours pre-
sents one of the major problems
in the nursing litter. Anything
that lowers the resistance of very
young pigs may increase their sus-
ceptibility to white scours, Anemia,
vitamin A deficiency, cold, or
draughty. damp quarters may con.
tribute to the development of the
disease.' Once the infection occurs
in one litter it may be spread to
neighboring litters on the feet of
the owner or by direct colieict of
.infected pigs with uninfected ones
if the pigs are allowed to come to
'a communal creep.
The main sign of the disease is
'a whitish or creamy diarrhea. The
pigs rapidly lose condition and be-
collie very rough in appearance.
- Ontario Veterinary College offie
gials report that prevention of the
disease consists of keeping the
pigs' resistance to disease at the
highest possible level •by preventing
anemia, feeding balanced rations
to' the Sows and providing good
warm, dry farrowing and nursing
quarters. If the disease occurs a
special effort should be made to
isolate the Infected litter away
from the other litters. The infection
may cause serious looses, conse-
quently a veterinarian should be
conselted and treatment started at
the earliest possible time, Cleaning
and disinfecting the farrowing pens
'between farrowing is most import-
ant, V this is not carried out the
infection may become seeded down.
IC the pen and affect subsequent
litters,
Your. notes and' assignments will
be clean, far .easier to read, And
higher grades'just naturally follow !
New! Sensational!
If there is one thing that is typical of healthy, thrifty hogs, and has been
ever since pigs first grew 'em -- it's a curly tail. Long before veterinary
• medicine reached to-day's advanced state, the "curl" was a. reliable symp-
tom of the state of a hog's health. And it's no joke even to-day —,'the
pig's tail still accurately reflects the well being of that part of the pig in
front of it. 4.}7te
STRESS CONDITIONS encountered by young hogs, particularly those
being handled through sales barns as more and more are, are brought
about by shipping and re-shipping, loading and unloading, chilling, change
of quarters' and exposure to disease. Serious set-backs can;- and often do
result. Losses caused by stress, in t hehogs going off feed, are big losses
that are sustained by the feeder. Quite possibly, that feeder is you.
SHUR-GAIN Pig Tail. Curler
is the fast, money saving solution for the progressive hog feeder. It's
designed to solve, not only the problems often encountered with sale barn
pigs, but also to ensure that pigs of your own breeding get off to a fast,
never-look-back start. ,At-4024 Arlita,..40PAtWod.,
