NATIVE OF MORRIS
DIES IN,CALIFORNIA
Southwestern Ontarid fruit and
vegetable growers have been ad,
vised to increase central packing
facilities as a means of producing
a better and more uniformly grad-
ed product.
E. A.. Earclley, Fruit and vege-
table Division, Canada Department
of Agriculture, made the suggestion
in a hard-hitting 'speech to the
Essex County Associated Growers'
convention at Leamingterm.
He urged 'delegates to improve
their grades and methods of pack-
aging, and criticized ; them foz'
carelessness in ;the past.
Essex tomatoes, said Mr. Eardley,
re one of the poorer graded pro-
ducts, in Ontario.

"I. it any 'wonder that buyers

they, fail to get 'a satisfactory pro.
uet from your area?" lie asked.
He reminded 'them that while

rates, many of which are so
suckled that damage to the ,con-
cnts -by the time it reaches market
s inevitable.
In a frank discussion of market-
ng Problems, Mr. Eardley, head
f the Division's inspection ,,and
rading, Said consumer satisfaction
s the most important factor in any
arm of merchandising, whether it
e fruits and vegetables Or auto-
mobiles.
As 'supermarkets increase in size
nd numbers, a greater share of
he consumer dollar is spent on imp-
ulse buying. Because -of the. many
'different kinds of fruits' and 'vege-
tables and, the increasing. variety
of frozen products, the housewife
will buy only what appeals to her,
