The United Nations Children's
Fund will receive $125,65 froin
Wingham people as a result of
their "Sliele-Out" to the girls of
the Wineharre at Hallow-
e'en.
This amount would provide
enough B.C.G. to protect 12,565
children from tuberculosis,' or
enough ; penicillin to ' cure 2,513
children of 'yaws. It could • protect
1,000 persOns 'for one year from
malaria or provide drugs for three
years to cure 125 children from
leprosy.,
The Wingharn C.G,I.T. and
U.N.I.C.E.F. thank the people of

Hold United Services
A union Protestant service was
held, in St, Andrew's Presbyterian
Church on Sunday evening when
members of the Presbyterian, Un-
ited and Anglican Churches and
The Salvation Army joined is a
Bible Society service.
Rev, T. G. Husser had charge of
the service, Rev. C, F, Johnson
read the Scripture lesson and. En-
voy Stanley Newman led in pray-
er.
The guest speaker was Rev.' A.
B. Walden, secretary of the Bri-
tish and Foreign Bible Society for
this area. Mr. Walden used a gos-
pel message relating to the work of
the society. ,
Following the church service an
organizational meeting was held
with a good representation from
each of the churches. The Wing-
ham Baptist Church will co-operate
and the Gospel Hall and 'Pentecos-
tal Churches will also be invited
to participate in the work of the
local branch.
Rev. Husser noted as chairman
for the meeting and Rev. Walden
showed a film, "The Word of Life
in Japan".
Jelin P. McKibben was elected '
president with Elmer Wilkinson as
seeretary-yeasterer. The ministers
will act; as vice-presidents 'by vir-
tue of their profeseion.
The other officers who will com-
pose the Wingharn branch will be
one woman appointed from each
of the missionary societies of the
local churches and one man from
each congregation, appointed by the
minister of the church.

ceivable and overdraft balance. She

'Wingham, drew a large audience
riot only from, the town and im-
mediate district but from at least

about the response of the audience

Lions Club, -was not intended as a
money-making event, but rather
as a service to the community in

ment of exceptionally high calibre,
one which people in smaller com-

Veteran Conductor

Career at Stratford
Russell Harry Ward, 65-year-old
veteran Canadian National Rail-
ways conductor, who has travelled
widely as a railwayman, last Fri-
day received his final running
orders.
Mr. Ward retired Friday night
when he brought the StratfOrd -
Brantford-Stratford mixed freight-
passenger train back 'to the Strat-
ford depot,
Boris at Wingham, he started
railroading -as a brakeman on
freight trains running out of Pal-
merston 35 years ago, and has been
a conductor the past 12 years.

,34 grandchildren and 33 great
grandchildren. ,
'One of her hobbies has been

she made quite a record, having
made, a remarkable number. Mrs,

guess at how many she has made

Her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joe
Simmons provided a lovely birth-
day cake and the nurses made tea,
Mrs: Simmons was able to sit at
the 'table with her family and en-
joy the occasion, She received a
number of, gifts, cards and flowers.

ed to launch the financial campaign
for the proposed swimming pool,
met 'on Monday evening and decid-
ed to make an immediate start on
their end of the project,
The committee is under the
chairmanship of DeWitt Miller and

McArthur, Warren Callan, Len
Crawford and Lloyd Carter,
Approximately $750.00 is avail-
able at once, being the balance held
in the water safety fund to which
many in Wingham and outside our
own community.

Officers and members of the
Wingham Golf Club have become
thoroughly angered by several acts'
of needless damage to property 'at
the club., On several occasions the
gate at the entrance 'to the club
has been. sins:shed, apparently 'by
ears. In -the last episode the ear
driver simply smashed his way,
through with he attempt. to -open'
the gate.
