When Camp BeIwood, sponsored
by the • Guelph Kinwanis
opens again July 18 it will bd big-
ger and better than ever. A boys'
and a girls' camp wit/ be held ,each
for three weeks, each having 00
children instead of the 50 of last
year. Nature study be•a princi-
pal new topic.
"We hope to teach :youngsters
about flora and fauna andspelling
in one swoop, )33., labelling trees
and flowers and by installing.stuff-
eel birds," said Mrs. Braaten.
The camp, on the site of a form-
er camp for the retarded operated
by the Rev« Waiter McCleary, was
taken over by the Ontario Associa-
tion after a series of experiments.
A group in Toronto taught retard-
ed children to swim; in Oshawa,
"We did what the experts said
could not be done—we kept the
children away from their parents
for three weeks without encounter-
lag serious homesickness problems,
despite the fact most of the child-
ren had not been away from home
before even , for a week-end.
Live happily
"Last year we found that retard-
ed ctiildren can live together hap-
pily, go for walks, learn to' swim,
to make fancy dresS costumes and
puppets, play basketball and other
games."
Mrs. Braaten says that retarded
children—youngsters with an Intel-
ligence quotient of less than 50,
and who may also have physical
handicaps—need more supervision,
take longer to learn, and cannot
attain the skills of normal child-
ren.
"But from our experience last
year we know that retarded child-
ren are just as delighted with new
knowledge and new accomplish-
ments.
"Our camp last year was a pilot
project and now groups within the
Ontario Association for Retarded
Children are experimenting with
camps of their own, some just for
week-ends, others for longer per-
iods."
