volved in the manufacture of the

Fire trucks from. Wingham, Mit-
chell and PaimerstOn were called
in to give assistance to the Listowel
brigade late Monday 'afternoon
when fire threatened the business
section of the town.
,The blaze .originated in an area
above the showroom of the W. G.
Blackmore and Son garage and
before the flames had been brought
under control the entire building,
along with most of the contents
were destroyed and the roof and
part of the repair department of
the Harvey Krotz garage was bad-
ly damaged.
Damage in the blaze is estimated
at something over $5.0,000:
The two garages are adjacent to
the Royal Hotel, on the corner of
Wallace Inkerman Streets, a
block north of .the main intersec-
tion in .the town,

SERVICE APPRECIATEDL•
Local Brentexi tell us that they
issed the usual kindness of: the
.iligharn Salvation Arbay officers
while they were fighting the fire
at Listowel on Monday evening.
Apparently several of the men
.rushed away .from home before
having their evening , meal and
they' were a little gaunt when they
got back later in the evening, The
local S. A: People are always right
on the spot with hot, coffee and
„ sandwiches when the fire brigade
is within its own territory.
BICYCLE ACCIDENT
CAUSES INJURIES
Bobby Selling, 13-year-old soh
of Mr, and Mrs, George Seiling,
was painfully injured at 4 o'clock
on Friday afternoon, when his tai, !
cycle collided with the rear of a
truck driven,' by Jerry Brophy on
Charles Street.
Approval was given by the der
(pertinent for the use of a let OWlir
ed by Jim. Hamilton!, in the Algae
area, for the construction of a
home, but the letter of approl:ral
from Queen's Park warned that no
further such approvals will be
granted to the town for single lots,
.Any further development must be
in the form of a, properly planned
subdivision,
councillor . Wilkinson said that
the town employees have done, con-
siderable preparatory work on the
streets and paying should 'com-
mence within a week or ten 4ays.
He also brought up the subject of
repairs to sidewalks in the town
and suggested that the owners of
properties fronted by these •walks
ahould be made to pay a share of
the cost of repairs.
The mayor and several council-
lor's disagreed, feeling that the re-
pairs which are made necessary by
normal passage of time should. be.
paid for by the town. They agrOed
that it was a, different matter
where sidewalks are broken down ,
by unusually heavy traffic, such
as service stations.
A letter was 'received some time
ago from the firm of auditors
which.handles the town books, stat-
ing that the audit fee was being
increased from $4.10 to $.640 this
year because of extra time required,
A reply to, the letter had been sent
to the auditors, pointing out, that
it was felt the charge was exce:--
sive. In return the firm had offered
to cut the increase by $100.00.
Council accepted the new figure.
The mayor referred to the fire
call, in 'Listowel Which the local
hrigade had answered on Monday
evening and said he was proud of
the part the Wingharn firemen bad
played there. floWeVei‘;'. lie= said" -
that the fire chief had called' lain
before taking the truck out of
town and he felt that such "per-
mission should not be needed, pro-
vided one truck and an adequate
biigade was left behind for llecal
protection. •
The subjeet of out of town calls
was then discussed, the contemns
of opinion —being that Wingham
cannot refuse to answer such calls
from other towns, for a' similar
kind of assistance could be badly
needed ,here at seine future time.
Councillor Gerbutt /Ws.s asked to
discuss the matter fully with the
fire committee, of which he is
chairman, and with the fire chief,
in order to arrive at a systematic
plan for handling such emergencies.
Council voted to convert a $500
bond held by the Cemetery Petite-
nent pare Fund to .a 14.7year bond
in the new issue.
At least three local business men
were swindled out of $75.00 a piece
during the past few days. They
were the victims bf a smoothly-
operating cheque passer, who made
the rounds of the main street be-
fore leaving town.
Police say the cheques all bore
the names `of well-known firms
Which do business en a "country-
wide scale, and had 'every appear-
ance of authenticity. The passers
verified identification with driver's
licenses and 'other such means.
The cheques, have since proven
to be worthless. The police have
not secured sufficient information
to make arrests as yet.
Taken to the Witrgham .ospital,
he was found to have suffered in-
ternal and leg injuries. He is be-
lieved to be .progressing satisfac-
torily this week.
