always been 10 a.m.—traditionally,
to let the gunner attend church
and not disturb others at worship.
The old cannon nearly sounded
for the 'last time a few months ago.
A check made of the detonating
caps used to fire her showed that
the supply was running low. When,
it came to recording, it was dis-
covered that the caps used were
made in 1918 and were no longer
manufactured. To have the caps
made to order would cost nearly
$10 for, each one.
ft was a. TV movie that saved
the gun. While watching some out-
laws blowing up a bridge, the of-
ficial responsible for the cannon
began to wonder if modern blasting
equipment might be adapted to
keep it in service. A call to
the explosives experts brought the sug-
gestion of using "squibs"— little
caps used for blasting machines.
The idea worked and instead of
costing the government $10 a boom
the "squibs" cost only 16 cents
each,
And so the gun which had been
doomed still resounds over Parlia-
ment gm, Sometimes the noonday
signal has its repercussions—like
the time a man Working up on the
tower of the Parliamentary Lib-
rary was so startled he .nearly fell
off the,' scaffold. Bill Davies, who
fired the gun until his retirement
a few years ago, recalls another
incident. "There was a dignified
lady standing nearby, leaning on a
parapet overlooking the canal.
After I fired the gun she came
over and told me off loudly. It
seems she had been drinking, a cup
of hot coffee. and sloshed it all
'over herself. Boy, was she mad!"
Though sometimes ,startling, the
bellow of the old gun would be
nats-M if it were ever silenced.
Now thanks to modein explosives,
it still has a long life ahead of it.
Together with the bells in the
Peace Tower, it will continue to
signal the approach of noonday in
Canada's capital for many years to
come.

Ottawa Time Gun
Each day for the past' 90 years,
a resounding boom has signalled
Ottawans that it's noon—time for
lunch and time to check their wat-
ches. The sound comes from the
oldest gun still in use in Canada,
according to 'an article in a recent
issue of C-I-L Oval.
I Situated on Parliament Hill, .the
gun was first sounded at noon one
day'in 1867. It was a present from
Britain andd its first big boom
marked the start of a new era in
the Dominion. Ever since, every
week day sharp at' 12 noon the
gun is fired. On 'Sundays, Christ-
inaS, New Year's Day, Thanksgiv-
ing and Good Friday, the time has
primed' with a suitable undercoat.
