UT UP YOUR. DUKES"
Remember that old •ery, from
away back in your public school
days? If you were a little girl in
those days you may not be quite
clear . „ but in any case it was the
challenge of one' young fighting
cock in another to. fight or get
knocked down.
This week ,) ou have an oppor-
tunity to get in there and start
swinging in one of the most realistie
and vital battles of your entire life,
Citizens of this community, under
the chairmanship of DeWitt Miller,
are calling at all the homes to col-
lect contributions for the fight
against an enemy each one of ns
secretly, or sometimes openly fears
—cancer.
In this day and age many of as
are so schooled to reliance upon gfoy-
4rnment assistance for every need,
that" we are inclined to sit back in
the belief that the government will
look after all phases of the battle
against disease. It is true that a
central authority is spending vast
sin s of money in the slow struggle
to master this deadly killer, ''but
many important aspects of the pro-
• gram are left to you and me. -
• One of the most vital of these is
• assistance to persons who are 'al-
feady suffering- from cancer anti teee-
• putting up a eourageous struggle
for life. In many other ways as well,
•the help of an interested public is
desperately needed.
° There is an old saying that provi-
dence helps those who help them-
selVes, and most of us feel that par-
ticipation in the fight may at some
time merit the mercy of freedom
of cancer,

SHOCKING EXPERIENCE
- Last week we reported the un-
nerving' experience suffered by Miss
Lillian llacott, when a stranger
entered her home and actually at-
tempted physical violence when she
threatened to call the police. The
best one can hope is that it was the
act of a temporarily deranged person
and not any nidication that personal
safety in towns such as ours is go-
ing to fall into the same precarious
Position it occupies in the large •
